tinnitus, the yahoo forum?

Hello, Iam new on this forum. I also suffer side effects from Propecia. One of side effects that scares me the most is my rinning ears, (tinnitus)Iv been checked an everything it as it should be. Ive googled tinnitus/rinnig ears an Propecia but ther is not a lot of hits. Most information is on this site. So I would like to ask the members of the old yahoo forum (or anyone) if they heard aboute this side effects before? and what they heard. Or if you have or had, tinnitus from propecia, I also would like to ask a few questions.

best regards

Tom

Read the links posted in this thread for info on Tinnitus… Propecia can interfere with GABAA receptors in the brain, which have been implicated in tinnitus.

Do a search on Google for “gabaa tinnitus” as well.

Hey Mew, thanx for your reply, Ive read as much of it as I could understand, still it must be one of the more rare side effects since not much i talked about it…I have treid GABA supplements but without any effect :frowning:

Tom43,
I also have the ringing in my ears. It’s probably a result of one of two things:

  1. the aforementioned GABA problems
  2. pseudotumor cerebri (increased intracranial pressure). I have this (only found by getting a spinal tap) and it causes tinnitus. Psuedotumor cerebri can be caused by fluctuations in cortisol levels or increased estrogens.

Good luck, and please let me know if this symptom gets resolved. It’s annoying, isn’t it?

hey Brainfogged, thanx for your reply. Yes its VERY annoying…

If its pseudotumor cerebri would it make sence to loos weight ?

I am not sure I understand the GABA problem 100%, but I guess nothing can be said about if it will solve it self or if we have to live with it the rest of our lives…, I been off P for 3½ mounth and my tinnitus is still the same, if its a GABA thing maybe ssir would do something… :unamused:

Losing weight is the prescription for overweight women who have pseudotumor, but I’m pretty sure my issue is hormonal. I’m skinny, so it’s not an option for me. Have any of the other problems resolved for you since you’ve been off propecia?

Yes, Ive had problems with my joints but its getting better an better, and so is my mood, when tinnitus is not to annoying. I also feel more awake/clear minded. what trouble the most is that tinnitus feel konstant, and Iam now scared its come to stay. Sexual side effects is also getting better, looking at girls makes sence again 8)

I’d say give your body a little more time. Tinnitus doesn’t cause permanent hearing loss, but it is a lot harder to hear people at bars and restaurants while you have it. I’m hoping mine resolves over time. I’m thinking about trying some Xanax (an allosteric GABA activator) to see if that does the trick. Let’s keep each other posted on any improvement in our tinnitus.

" Let’s keep each other posted on any improvement in our tinnitus"

yes lets do that, Ill pm. you my hotmail so you can write if you want, its not every day that Im on this site, but I am always interrested in updates and tips on side effects, and tinnitus…

All,

Came across a member (“poet”) on a hairloss forum that was experiencing Tinnitus since being on Finasteride. Read the thread here:

hairlosshelp.com/forums/mess … SGDBTABLE=

He then started a 2nd thread after discontinuing propecia and surprise surprise, his Tinnitus began to clear up. He then started propecia once again and it came back. Pretty conclusive evidence for him, and he has now quit the drug.

Read his 2nd thread about quitting and tinnitus clearing up here:

hairlosshelp.com/forums/mess … adid=68756

So for all you Tinnitus sufferers… looks like it is definitely possible Finasteride contributed to your problem, if this guy’s experience is any indication.

Thats great, thanx…

Came after taking fin for 2 weeks… still have it after 1 week off

How is your tinnitus?

I got mine after 1 mounth, taking 0,2 mg a day. Its now about 4 mounhts after stopping Propecia and it is still there, same volume :frowning:

Its the only side effect left from propecia. I dont know what to do…

My ears are ok…

I fear that while on Propecia the drug somehow made my ears “week” an unable to defend them selfs, I remember sitting in a cafe one night and every sound all of a sudden started to cause pain, that night I went to a night club but had to leave because I thought the music was to loud, so I went to the doctor to get my hearing checked, and they where fine, not great but fine for someone in my age, that must mean that the tiny hair in the ear are ok, but the part of the brain receiving audio data must be damaged or trying to rebild. This I would like to Know…

how old are you, Iam 31
did you use regaine/rogaine fighting hairloss?, its said to cause tinnitus aswell

Let’s all keep each other posted on any improvement in our tinnitus

Here my story. Began on Propecia for 6 years ago. After 2 years use I suddenly got hearing loss on both ears. After stopping Propecia I got the hearing back. But while I got this problem I often hear large engines which no one around me hear. Very very high.

After a while a started Propecia again because I thought it was stress on the job that caused this. One year later I got the same problem and go also a terrible tinnitus which didn’t go away. I stopped Propecia again and got some better afterwards. But this time I thought it was an new allergi medicine that cause it…

So for 3 years ago I totally missed hearing on both ears and so it was for several months. I started to work out and cutting all medicine including allergy medicine and Propecia and haven’t taking it since.

So after the 3rd time I finally begin to see what was happening and that Propecia caused it. But it was a hell and I thought it was to late to get the hearing back. After acupunture, putting hydrocortisone in ears, checking tonsilities, etc… I got better and worse again. Today I hear better, but my brain disconnects sound sometimes and special in stressed situations.

I think the tinnitus is caused by the body producing to much or too little of something. And in my situation I think back of the nose in connection with the ear thubes I got rash/allergic reactions which closes and cause the tinnitus. It also closesthings above nose which give headache…

So I think it could be a easy fix, but what ?

I hope it could be a easy fix…

Like your story arvidnilsen, I also have been on propecia before an got a lot of problems, so I stopped Propecia and a year after I was ok again, still I was not sure at that time that it was propecia causing all my problems…so I had to try again, amd here Iam…Now Iam 100% sure that its propecia making me ill…

“So for 3 years ago I totally missed hearing on both ears and so it was for several months. I started to work out and cutting all medicine including allergy medicine and Propecia and haven’t taking it since”

this means that you now have had tinnitus for 3 hole years without any improvments ?, thats tuff…

Hi, yes. But sometimes with very low tinnitus… I can’t imagine self how I have managed to go through theese years and still belive that it should be fixed some day…

-AN

hello…

my tinnitus also change volume, the last 3 days have been pretty bad…, but still its always there…

arvidnilsen,

do you still have other side effects from propecia?

A tip. Try allergic tablets for 1-2 weeks and see if you have any changes… I started with this for a week ago and now things seems to bee better here… Hope it will last. I uses Loratadin from Ratiopharma felleskatalogen.no/felleskat … 26thin%3D0

Exhausted often and some cold intoleranse, but not any other side effects. My testosterone went from 10.4 in 2004 to 15.1 in 2007 so it has fixed it self but it took some years.

Can you point me to where you heard Rogaine may cause tinnitus? I still take Rogaine so I am concerned.

Thanks.
