Testosterone results- please help!

Hello,

Ive just got back from the doctors today, and have received my testosterone results. Unfortunately he would only test this as he thought checking other hormones would be a waste of time!

Below are the results. Please can someone help me make sense of this, because i cant! I am not very good with these terms to be honest. I have typed down information exactly how it appears on the printed sheets;

  • Gonadotrophin levels

  • (DGG)- Normal, no action

  • Normal gonadotrophins. Testo/SHBG to follow

  • Serum FSH level 4.7 U/L (2.0-11.0)

  • Ref Ranges: Follicular: 2-11 Luteal: 2-9 Post Menop:>25 Male: 1.8-10

  • Serum LH Level 2.6 U/L (2.0-10.0)

  • Ref Ranges: Follicular: 1-12.5 Luteal: 1-12 Post Menop: >25 Male

  • 1.5-9.3

  • R Androgens

  • (DGG)

  • No evidence of testosterone deficiency

  • Serum testosterone 28.8 nmol/L (10.0-30.0)

  • Serum sex hormone binding glob 30 nmol/L (10-62)

  • R Free Androgen Index HI 96.0 (25.0-90.0)

The doc said that these are normal results. When i asked him whether they are good results he just responded by saying ‘they are in range, don’t worry’. He said the the free Androgen result is a little high but nothing to worry about.

So are these positive results in any way or should i worry? Also what is serum testosterone, is it normal testosterone? i am slightly confused, the ranges don’t match what ive researched on the net.

I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Your Total Testosterone levels (serum means blood) are fantastic. You don’t have Free Testosterone but judging from the Free Androgen Index, sounds like your Free T is likely high too.

Since he didn’t measure Estradiol, TSH or Prolactin, you don’t know if those are playing a role in sexual dysfunction issues.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Are any of the other results too low? And should i ask for these further 3 tests you mentioned? I really don’t think he would get them for me that easily unless i insisted on seeing an endocrinologist. He reckons seeing one would be pointless though!

Well he thinks my on and off mild depression has been the cause for my loss of libido and morning erections. Im positive that finesteride has caused this just not sure how, as a result of this my low moods have just increased. He really refuses to believe that finesteride, a drug he prescribes only for women could do such damage…

Ive been off fin for nearly a year now

On the surface your LH is on the low side, but not given total serun T being quite high.

Loom for Bostonusa2009’s blood test thread, in there I posted a link to a website where you can calculate your free testosterone from your SHBG and total serum T.

kazman

Prescribes it for women? What for?

PSE

I don’t know what everyone is waiting for.

Besides that…I think if we can continue to isolate, the issue could be neuorological, comparable tests we have down, the better.

Prescribes it for women? What for?

Not sure what exactly for, but he only prescribes it to women and not for hair loss in men. The fact that he prescribes it im not surprised he keeps ignoring me whenever i mention finesteride having an effect on me. He thinks he has isolated the problem and that its depression causing a decrease in libido. That can happen but he is wrong in this case…

So are my results ok? just not sure what to do next…

From the thread I tried to direct you to above:

Plug your numbers in here to calculate your true free testosterone:

issam.ch/freetesto.htm
Legend has it that Shippen himself had a hand in developing this calculation technique.

The “Free T” that the labs do is notoriously inaccurate, much better to calc it from SHBG and total serum T. . ALB is likely albumin (range looks correct, and it does not change much month to month).

Hi Kazman,

Thanks your your reply and finding this site. Its asking for my SHBG and albumin (not sure what they are!) which do not seem to be included in my results… should i get these?

JSK,

SHBG is sex hormone binding globulin. You have that test done. As for albumin you can use an average value. I think it is around 4.0.

Right so i have tried calculating my free testosterone using the link provided.

This is what i entered,

Albumin- 4.0 g/dl
SHBG- 30 nmol/L
Testosterone- 28.8 nmol/L

I then clicked on calculate giving the following results,

Fee testosterone 0.741 nmol/L= 2.57 %
Bioavailable Testosterone 16.2 nmol/L= 56.2%

I’m not sure if this looks correct, and not sure what it all means.

Can someone help to tell me if this looks normal?

Doctors use finasteride to deal with hirsutism in women. Google it if you are interested

The best hormones I have seen in a while. Even your FSH looks good, dude. Nice!

The lower LH and the higher T, the better the pituitary is functioning. LH is needed to produce T. As he has everything working and has enough T, he doesn’t need that much LH.

Fanjeera, yes , this is exactly what I meant when I typed “but not (truely) low given total serum T being quite high”

I’ve decided to post in this section rather than the recoveries one as i feel i still have some way to go. I would rather post there once i feel over 90% better. I’m no way near that yet.

Its been about 17 months since i quit finasteride. At first it was hell- felt very tired and depressed, 0 libido, 0 sensations, complete numbness, no morning erections… everything had just shut down.

Now i feel better compared to that. The sensations when masturbating are slightly better, still no way near as exciting as pre fin. I can also feel more of a force when it happens. I went through months having no morning erections. Now i get one from time to time. But they do vary in size and still aren’t as powerful as before. The one i had today was pretty good though. I actually dreamt of a girl i used to fancy, and that i was chasing her for her number. I find that when i go to sleep not worrying, my sleep and dreams improve. Libido has increased a bit, though that is still the main issue. I can go through the odd period where i can feel a slightly higher libido, but then back to normal. There are probably other things too, which i may point out another day…

My ways of trying to recover have only been through taking supplements, diet, exercise and time. My diet and exercise could be better though. Time i believe seems to be helping the most. One thing i must point out and which i take as a very positive sign, is that the other day as a test i took a quarter of a silagra pill- it really stimulated something and actually had an effect on me for a couple of days, would highly recommend these pills as they can help you function somewhat. Also, i take horny goat weed now, which i find can help too.

Still, i have a long way to go. Something is still definitely not right down there, and up there mentally. Having to battle with this, as well as other issues such as anxiety is not easy… But I’m going to keep at it the natural way. I’m going to try and do a lot more in fact, as i can be lazy often. I should really sign up to the study too. I just hope that from my words, you too can see that things can improve, it will probably just take a hell of a lot of time…

Uh, yea… that’s probably the #1 thing you or anyone else can do to help improve our situation, by helping get the necessary medical awareness we so desperately need. To not participate is to shoot yourself in the foot, I really can’t understand why some people have not participated… but please make it a priority. We’ve been waiting YEARS for something like this, and must make the most of this opportunity.

Mew, it pisses me off when people make posts like that…It’s pure LAZINESS!

You could have signed up for the study in the time it took to write that soppy text from which no-one really learned anything. You’re essentially another piece of deadwood, talking inanities about his pathetic dick and balls. We’ve heard it all before. It’s boring now.

If you sign up for the trial, you’ll add weight to an important movement which will result in proper medical attention. We need numbers, my friend, and you need to sign up.

So far, I’m not interested in your suffering or your saggy comments. I’d rather you just sat in bed in your rank laziness, fondling your limp penis thinking about women from a distant past. As there will no women in your future.

I will, however, respect you and commend you if you participate in the formal study. Then we can all go places. You included.

JN

I also don’t understand, why people don’t participate in this studie.
I know that our situation it’s not good, i also have severe depression, lack of motivation, don’t get interest for anything, etc, etc, etc,… and i forced my self to do the interview with Dr. Irwig. Note that i’m not a native english speacker, but the man had a lot of compreession and atention, it WASN’T SO DIFFICULT.
Stay in bed waitting for the miracle, will not resolve this.
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks

sufferer2001recovered2009,

I don’t appreciate some of your comments at all. You clearly missed the point of my post- i was experiencing some improvement, so i decided to post about it! I just wanted to give an update and say what herbs/drugs has helped, just as other people do on this site. Is that so bad? clearly it is, i wont bother in future then.

Yes i can be lazy sometimes, but not always. Didn’t i just mention i’m trying the natural way through diet, exercise etc… Is that being lazy? I’ve had to deal with a lot of crap in my personal life lately not just this, but i still manage to get on with life. And yes i am doing things not just sitting around all day dwelling about it.

And about the study… you have no idea what thought i’ve given to it or if i even qualify. I have given it much thought actually. I have doubts i’ll qualify, but as i just said in my post, i will sign up to it.
