I didn’t see the extended but that movie was GOOD

In a valley of Evil…I could have the babe wrong but it’s close

Great movie check it out

The Wire is a classic because it shines a light on how societal systems have become inherently corrupted, stagnant, broken, unjust and harmful for many citizens. Using Baltimore as a microcosm, each season looks at a different part of how the drug trade is allowed to exist, how it is enabled, and how it destroys the fabric of societies. Throughout the seasons they move further away from the day to day of the drug trade and look more at organised crime as a whole.

First season is all about the streets, second season is about the ports and how international drug smugglers bring them in, third season is about politics, fourth season is about the school system and fifth is about the media.

It’s created by David Simon, who was a Baltimore Sun journalist, and Ed Burns, a Baltimore homicide detective. Everything is shot in the streets of Baltimore, they use local actors, the writing is some of the best you’ll see and the actors are incredible. It’s a tie with The Sopranos for my favourite show of all time.

Highly recommend.

Watched Nightmare Alley at the cinema the other day which I enjoyed. I won’t go into detail but it’s set in the 40s and stars Bradley Cooper, who plays a worker at a travelling carnival who befriends a clairvoyant and her mentalist husband with the intention of leaching the husband’s skillset in order to monetise it for himself.

It’s pretty long and personally I’m not usually great with long films but I didn’t find myself getting restless and losing focus. I think the pacing was really good and the ending great. Definitely worth a watch if it sounds up your street.

I saw an ad for that and it sounds interesting.

Good Sunday evening film when you’ve got a bit of time to kill imo.

Title: The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window
Genre: Dark Comedy, Satire (apparently), Thriller, Mystery
Cast: Kristen Bell, Michael Ealy, Tom Riley
Directed by: Michael Lehmann
Screenplay by: Rachael Ramras, Hugh Davidson
Summary:

Hoo boy, this one is a stinker. Was having a particularly rough Sunday afternoon last week, so decided to just lay in bed and find a series to binge watch. This came up as one of the top 10 on Netflix, and I liked Kristen Bell in House of Lies, so decided to give it a watch.

In short, just don’t.

Apparently, this was meant to be satire, which the writers and directors did an awful job of communicating. It’s about a middle-aged alcoholic divorcee who lives her life watching the lives of others unfold on her very upper-middle class suburban street. She is tormented by past events, including her nine-year-old daughter being eaten by a cannibalistic serial killer during some twisted, fucked up take your child to work day. The ex-husband is an FBI psychologist. Middle-aged alcoholic divorcee regularly has hallucinations and psychosis.

A new family moves in across the street, consisting of hot dad and seemingly sweet innocent daughter. Middle-aged alcoholic divorcee develops a crush, fast, and then finds out hot dad has a hot flight-attendant girlfriend. A few days later, she believes she witnesses hot flight-attendant girlfriend being murdered. A parody (seriously, I didn’t even realise it was a parody until the ending) of thriller crime mysteries begins. Will people believe middle-aged alcoholic divorcee, given her history of alcoholism and visions? Will she find out the truth?

If this was meant to be satirical, it was painfully unfunny and dull, thus rendering it a convoluted, worn out “killer across the street” tale. Even Kristen Bell was bad. There’s so many plot traps and red herrings, and it’s unnecessarily long. Seriously this should have been canned in the writer’s room. Will Ferrell was an executive producer: Fuck knows what he saw in this hot mess.

Please don’t do a second series.

Please don’t watch this. I just saved you about 4 hours in case you were mildly interested.

Score: 2.5/10

It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but scarface and goodfellas are definitely two movies which I would recommend.

I watched them both 5 times, and I still enjoy it.

Watch Casino then I think you’ll like it even more

Ya I love Casino. It gets kind of overlooked because of goodfellas. Donnie Brasco, The Irishman and American Gangster are also must see if you’re into the mob/gangster movies.

I recently watched Training Day for the first time. Amazing movie.

Since we have discussed TV shows before in this thread, I will hijack this movie thread (please do not call the mods, I hear they have little tolerance ) to say that I just finished the two seasons of the The Witcher.

I am not big on fantasy, always thought LOTR was “just decent”. But I liked GoT, and many people have recommend The Witcher to GoT fans.

The Witcher is a very nice show with a classic medieval fantasy setting. The lead character has a very grumpy charme and great fight scenes. The first season is a bit all over the place, while the parts with the lead character have a lot of a “Monster of a week” feeling. But towards the end of the first season and certainly in the second season there is much more world building and the larger story arc becomes more apparent, which is quite intriguing. Compared to GoT, the show is more focused on a few characters compared to the large cast of GoT and doesn’t quite have the same depth of great characters or the emotional punch. But it is still a very nice show.

Thanks for the heads up. I had added it to my list but will give it a miss. I didn’t appreciate that it was a series. Too many hours to give up to a potential dud. I also didn’t realise that the director was Michael Lehmann. As I used to feast on movies, like a clairvoyant I was “getting” Meet the Applegates coming through the fog, and true enough he directed both that and the much more iconic Heathers. Still, a once next big thing director still has to pay his bills.

I watched Into The Wild yesterday for the first time in years. Damn good movie, I’ll write up a review this week.

What the fuck happened to Emile Hirsch?

Apparently he got heavily into drugs and attacked a paramount executive

I try not to believe every story
Maybe the executive was a scumbag Hollywood you know what and that’s the reason

But he’s definitely blackballed at the moment

Very unsophisticated but I watched the latest Jackass movie the other day. Have to admit I enjoyed it, I’m a sucker for such childish humour. There are one or two scenes I can’t believe they actually filmed; could’ve gone very wrong.

Has anyone seen Licorice Pizza? Seen a lot about it but not 100% sure it’s for me.

I’m gonna try and watch Licorice Pizza later I’ll let ya know

Just came out of the theatre after watching “The Worst Person in the World”. Poignant, but also funny arthouse film about struggling with life decisions in your 20s and 30s. Won award for best actress at Cannes.

I think I almost felt something :joy:. Recommended!

Definitely going to see Licorice Pizza too. Have enjoyed pretty much every PT Anderson film. “The Master” and “Magnolia”, I think are my favorites of his.
