I feel “better” (like everyone I never feel good) on an empty stomach. Even if I have something small I get bloated, have acid reflux and it all goes to fat. It’s like my metabolism stopped after Fin. Literally down to one small meal at the end of the day and I don’t lose a pound. Paleo type foods help with the bloating and acid but this is still a major issue for me.
Count me in. The thing I notice most about food is when I am in school. If I eat carbohydrates I get almost instant brainfog and have trouble following along in school and I feel in a daze. I seem ok if I eat meat or nuts though
Visionquest, Since this is currently a spark of hope for many of us would you mind detailing any improvements that the fast provided to you?
I can’t recall the details of your situation. Did you have ED problems, loss of energy, memory problems and others prior to fasting. If you had any of these and saw some improvement, could you please let us know. I could live without the sex drive for now, it’s the other stuff that kills me.
During the last six months, i’ve been trying to figure out that what things cause me bloodsugar problems. It seems that any carbs at all cause me intense brainfog (which is real problematic at school) and listnessness (really fucking problematic if you are trying to figure your life and try to get motivated to do anything). I’ve got around this the best i can so far with eggs and youghurt in the morning and eating just veggies and mostly meat at school.
but for some reason i can tolerate pasta and white rice (with chicken or meat) in the evenings. I will also keep an eye on whether eggs and youghurt cause me a reaction (yes, even those can tire me out a little but it’s very minor compared to carbs).
Curious. How do you prepare your egg’s and what kind of yogurt - kefir or doesn’t matter?
For instance, a diebetic would normally eat only hard boiled egg’s, as fried egg’s are not the best choice.
Astonishing, that our metabolism is also a link to this suffering. Visionquest, after the 30 day fast, did the fog return, and what kind of diet did you remain on after the fast or up until now. Any insight’s?
It seems pretty clear, that we are taxing our metabolism’s somehow.
To some degree it did return. I was consuming alot of sugar back then (i love sweets) which, imo, contributes to brain fog.
The brain fog did lift. Mind was clearer, more focussed, body was at ease.
To be clear, I did not eat or drink anything from 4 am to 9 pm for 30 days. Outside of these times, I did eat or drink.
The lack of food decimated my already decimated libido. I have a friend who is completely celibate (long story, it’s his spiritual journey) and he states that fasting kills the lust in his heart (for sex or anything) while improving his cognitive skills and intellectual output (he learned Chinese since becoming a celibate, attributes the increase in mental capacity to his lifestyle/habits).
I guess youre talking about ramadan, the problem with it is the insane amount of sugar traditionnaly eaten at dawn to break the fast (dates, then pastries etc). Maybe try to do it without simple sugars at fast-breaking time this year, it will be MUCH harder this way though. (especially when your family is going nuts on pastries etc)
Fascinating. Thanks for sharing, but it seems that the fasting only temporarily managed the problem, and the mental side’s do return even after the fast. Yes, this confirms what forum member Japanther has stated already, or that a very steady, long drawn out, strict, disciplined diet & lifestyle change will only heal this with time. Environment, is also key and low stress. Hardest thing for most of us to do, is to find a place to heal (low stress lifestyle for a long stretch of time)
As far as I know, Japanther, was the only member to have healed his brain fog/cognitive illness with a strict lifestyle change - raw food diet and low stress environment.

Your friend is very wise. There is much wisdom to be learned here. Not saying celibacy, is the way to go, but perhaps seeing our predicament as a need for immediate total change, rather than clinging and pining for our old lifetstyle’s, and what we have lost, is far more healthy from a spiritual point of view. I am willing to do anything to get better, as long as it does not involve taking any drugs. Maybe becoming a monk for a while, would be an interesting healing journey? I’ve heard Leonard Cohen, during an interview state, that people with intense, immeasurable suffering usually choose these spiritual lifestyle’s, in hope’s of finding themselves healthy one day again. Leonard Cohen, is a famous poet/musician, by the way, and got and probably still get’s mad pussy! I guess you don’t have to be a monk, or whatever forever! Just leave when you feel healed and resign? lol Who knows…I am considering anything right now. All options’ are on the table.
Hey, a small update: morning fasting is DEFINITELY a good way =for me= to avoid brainfog in the first hours of the day. This comes from somebody who has had
a. blood sugar problems/sensitivity since a little baby apparently or at least since being a little kid
b. that got worse post-finasteride, especially around midway through the first Kos therapy cycle but magically got almost cleared at the end of the second Kos therapy cycle (there was a month and a half time between the sessions). Since those times the problem has been creeping back slowly but surely.
c. I eat two eggs, meat, youghurt and milk products in the morning with occasional vegetables… it’s better than eating carbohydrates in the morning but i still get brainfog after 2 to 3 hours after the meal.
I’ve been abstaining for eating this morning for over 3½h and i still am clear from brainfog. Ofc the low bloodsugar is coming again but the brainfog is still gone (as is the following LISTNESSNESS/apathy/big treshold to do tasks and so forth).
So! I can only guess what’s up with my body, even after eating tons of proteins and fat - granted, it’s not natural or whole foods but if you just think of those then i should be good.
Making an educated guess, i would think that the problem COULD be in allergies. Dairy and Eggs are both stuff that you can get allergic to (especially when you think of the leaky gut syndrome that you may have got familiar with from IHP’s recovery topic). Ofc i can’t vouch for that obviously but it’s the first thing that comes into my mind i would guess.
Nah. I mean I’d LIKE to do kefir or sauerkraut or whatever but i’m in the process of trying to get a job first. I just cook my eggs, i have no idea about the diabetics restrictions (where did you hear that from? do you have any sources?)
Also ahhahah, +1 for citing Leonard Cohen in general, +2 for spiritual advice. robertine “cool guy” totti…
I have have not for for 16 hours and I feel much better than usual. In the night I had numerous erotic dreams and decent nocturnal erections. I woke up once in the night and experienced some very sharp pains in the gut - good sign if you ask me.
I am completely sold on fasting! I just need to find the time to go ahead with a real fast. I will upset my family if I start rejecting food for a week or more.
I can’t believe what i am reading all these years suffering from brain fog after eating carbs and I never ever thought it was related to my propecia sides. My brain fog didn’t start until a year after i stopped taking prop. I had the same issues intense brain fog I was forced to go on a low carb diet it was the only way to could function. I took 5htp last year 50mg a day and it cleared my fog. Carbs affect our sertonigenic systems. I believe the brain fog is due to a lack of serotonin.
