I started taking Propecia in September of 2000. Unlike many others on here, it took 7 years before I had any major problems. I had an extremely high libido before taking Propecia, and this continued to be the case for years afterwards. The only difference I noticed early on was that my ability to sustain an erection was slightly decreased. Besides that, I had no side effects for years.

Interestingly, about 4 years after I started taking it, I had a doctor warn me about the side effects and he encouraged me to look into this myself. I got on the internet to research the topic and that is how I originally found this forum. At the time I concluded that the people here were just a bunch of hypochondriacs, and I went on taking Propecia with no concern at all. If I had taken the warnings seriously at the time and quit back then, maybe it would have been soon enough that I would have been ok. But hindsight is 20/20.

Then finally in 2007 I started to see the side effects. I began to notice that my libido was not the same anymore, and then when I entered a relationship towards the end of that year, I realized that I had erectile dysfunction to the point where I could not have sex without Viagra. I came back on this forum and started reading the studies, and realized that Propecia was the cause of my problems. I quit taking it cold turkey around December 2007. Things only got worse, and I have never recovered.

My syptoms include:

  • low libido (sometimes even non-existent). I used to think about sex constantly and have an extremely high libido. Now I never feel that I NEED to have sex, and think about sex much less
  • erectile dysfunction
  • dry skin and scalp. I used to have oily skin and now it’s very dry.
  • emotional flatness. I used to have an extremely bad temper all my life, but now I hardly ever get mad at all. But I also feel emotionally blunted when it comes to positive emotions and I don’t get pumped up and excited like I used to. Particularly, listenting to my favorite rock songs doesn’t pump me up the way it used to
  • hair doesn’t fall out any more
  • wrinkles on penis

For a while after I quit, I had hoped that in time things would get better on it’s own. I came to realize that is not the case, and I have been reading this forum quite a bit for the past half year. I read through every single article in the medical research section and read through every single theory.
I have gotten my blood tests done fairly recently (which I will post shortly), and took part in Dr. Irwig’s study.

Welcome Runningman. Be aware that nettle root and DIM are both 5 alpha reductase Type 2 inhibitors. While it is not yet clear whether androgen desensitization, or permanent down regulation of 5 alpha reductase type 2 is the primary culprit, it would be very prudent to avoid these substances as they act in a similar fashion to finasteride itself.

Where did you source your Tonkat Ali?

I originally posted my member story about 2.5 years ago. All my sexual symptoms that I described then have persisted, plus I have developed the following symptoms as well: skin wrinkling prematurely, stretch marks, gray hairs in my beard, and joint problems.

Regarding my skin problems, I developed dry skin around the time frame when my symptoms started. Then years later, I noticed that skin on the back of my hands was starting to look wrinkled and the skin on my penis as well. Then I noticed I was developing bad crow’s feet when I made a facial expression. The quality of my skin has gone down overall, but it has remained the worst on the back of my hands and my penis. I also discovered that I have bad stretch marks on my thighs and on my back. My skin seems to have lost it’s elasticity in general. My beard has also started to go gray and I’m increasing seeing more gray hairs in it. Also, my joints seem to be getting worse and I’ve been having problems with elbows recently.

As far as my sexual symptoms, there has been no improvement. One important thing that I noticed is that getting drunk can greatly aggravate my symptoms for over a month. I did have one major recovery for 2 weeks when I started taking DHEA. For those 2 weeks my libido was back and my erectile function was good. My personality also started going back to normal where I felt competitive and would lose my temper at times. But that only lasted for 2 weeks and even after cycling off DHEA and cycling back on, I never had the same benefits.

About 6 weeks ago, I went to see a thyroid doctor and started taking Armour Thyroid because my TSH has been elevated for years now. I just got my lab results back this month and my TSH is back down to a much better level. The benefit I’ve seen from the Armour Thyroid is that I have more energy. It hasn’t helped any of my other symptoms. I also started doing vegetable juicing every day about 2 months ago. I would say that’s helped with my mental clarity but I haven’t seen any major benefits outside of that.

Other than that, I’ve donated to the PFS when it first started and plan on donating again. It’s been over 5 years now that I’ve had symptoms, and things aren’t getting any better, so that is my only hope right now.

RunningMan
I agree thyroid is an effect not the cause for us but fixing thyroid will help cope with daily life better.
Have you got big pot belly?
how is your appetite?

I worked in the record biz most of my life. I can’t respond to music I’ve loved my entire life anymore. It does nothing for me. This is from a guy that owns nearly 10,000 LP’s. Yes Lp’s.

Dopamine deficiency/inadequate means to produce dopamine?

That’s my experience with Armour Thyroid as well.

My build is actually thin and slightly muscular. I never really had many hypothyroid symptoms despite having a high TSH. My appetite is average.
