Why so much talk about GABA agonists?

These are just as bad if not worse than fin…

They’re extremely addictive and cause horrible memory and brain fog problems…

Check out benzobuddies.org or benzo.org.uk/manual/

I have been on them long before I took propecia and still am not 100% normal thanks to an overzealous doctor who thought “klonopin for life” was the cure to my sleeping problems. It’s not. Am I missing something about these drugs that you all know & I don’t? I guess I’ve just been on one side of this issue… they should not be taken for more than 3 weeks at a time unless you have severe panic disorder and nothing else works… then, it’s a tradeoff but know your dose will escalate for life as your memory declines. I didn’t…and I got in a lot of trouble for it (I am in my late 20s and practically have alzhimers thanks to a prescribed drug)

please refer to prior posts and studies before asking questions like this in the future. no one here has the time to constantly keep explaining reoccurring information.

I think you missed the point.

First of all, I was just telling people that if they start taking GABA agonists, they will just be trading in one problem for another…so this is a warning to people considering this as a treatment. You’ll end up in the same place on a benzo in 2 years that you did on propecia in 2 years. It’s guarenteed.

Second, there are about 300 pages of FAQs and studies… most of which I actually did read & GABA is only mentioned once or twice… and it’s usually referenced in a backwards or highly tangential manner. There is one study that says that in vivo (test tube) there are changes in plasticity of the gaba receptor due to a metabolite of fin and people seem to have run with this finding all over the site.

Example: “Has anyone tried Xanax or any of the other GABA increasing drugs??? It sounds like this would really help our brain fog and visual problems.”

– No, it will help in the short term and worsen everything in the long term. Read Benzobuddies.org. (Hence, my post). Furthermore, only GABAc has anything to do with the eye - and no drugs target GABAc & propecia doesnt affect GABAc (not even sure it affects GABAa based on the study posted). Finally, what happens in monkey vision doesn’t happen in human vision.

Example: From the FAQ you told me I didn’t read: “blocks Progesterone --> Allopregnanolone conversion, thus interfering with GABA-A receptor function in the brain (anxiety, possible seizures, depression)” – in test tubes, that’s nice … but the neural network of the brain is 100x more complicated. Also, GABA is not involved in depression: (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2174069: “These results do not support the idea that GABAergic mechanisms are involved in the pathophysiology of depression”) I haven’t heard of anyone having a seizure while quitting propecia but you WILL have a seizure if you stop benzos overnight.

I am sure you would have undoubtably also jumped down my throat and told me to “read the FAQ” if you were posting on a hair loss forum about “considering propecia” 5 years ago and I replied “why would you consider something that has a high potential to kill your sex drive?” Sorry to be the bearer of bad news - but benzos are a nightmare. You can find out now & thank me or you can find out in 3 years when you’re addicted to them and your memory degrades to nothing.

A lot of the research cited here: propeciahelp.com/forum/viewt … light=gaba is the EXACT research that got 1000s of people hooked on drugs like xanax, klonopin, etc…for years. Most of this was in the early 90s. Now, we know that what happens in monkey brain does not translate to humans, and these are NOT good drugs to take long term. Monkeys don’t have advanced cognitive processing like we do and that is why if you read the full text of these (highly academic) studies, you will see a huge “limitations” section where they make that very clear. Anyway, you don’t have to trust me. I’ve provided two useful links about the downside of gaba agonists in my first post. From there, it’s your / your doctor’s choice.

I was asking “WHY” people are advocating this treatment because I know (from experience) it’s not a good idea. I wasn’t asking “why” in the sense that I didn’t read / understand the research.

Finally, why so bitchy? Are you going to blame propecia for that too? If “nobody has the time” then don’t reply that “nobody has the time.” Look at the time I took at 2 AM when I have to be up in 5 hrs. How ever did I find the time? You’re welcome.

You’re only inclining GABA antagonist to represent benzos and their effects of the GABAa receptor. look at the literature on other antagonis such as GHB which affect GABAb receptor. GHB and it’s neuro and hormonal effects (when taken properly) will not have any of the effects you claim ie decreased memory, lower sex drive, etc (quite the contrary actually). I’m not trying to offend you or anyone else who is new around here, but it does upset me when people on here, especially newer ones, choose to indulge in posting information without properly looking through, researching, and terming everything first. ie not every GABA antagonist is a benzo and we don’t know if they are detrimental or not to our situation considering no one quite understands it to begin with. please post in the theories section next time if you wish to.

Actually I moved his post to this section.

it’s ok – sorry…

im honestly just really bitter about what benzos did to me. way more bitter than propecia…i can live with low sex drive, but the memory issues i have caused significant issues with work and school. it’s a sore subject.

I dont know anything about GHB or GABAb…i thought alcohol worked by hitting GABAb. Anyway, just reading posts like “xanax will cure our brain fog” made me worried for the people on here. Cortisone also clears up brain fog in the short term for some people…esp with the adrenal fatigue theories that are out there, cortisone can “help” but then you get into some bad feedback / suppression issues after a month or two.
