The true irony of Finasteride

Hi all,

Pretty new to the forum been on here about a month. If you read my other post you’ll see my other issues with Fin (blotchy skin, low libido, etc etc) I am submitting this post to see if anyone has had crazy shedding after Fin. Now don’t get me wrong, I am WAY past the point of giving a shit about my hair loss, all I want (as I am sure all of us on this site do) is to get back to normal or at least semi-normal.

That being said it does not help with my constant depression and low self esteem when my hair is falling out like I have a disease. I took Fin for 4 months and I have been off for 2.5 months. It is hard to explain but I can actually “feel” my hair fall out. A lot of ppl have told me this is my imagination but TRUST ME IT ISN’T. It’s almost like a little “pinch” it’s hard to describe. It doesn’t hurt at all, but when it happens I can reach to that part of my head, lightly pull and there is the hair, usually with a whiteish/yellowish bump attached to the end.

I fully understand that hair shedding pales in comparison to the side effects that myself and I’m sure most of you have gone through. I wouldn’t write a post on this if it wasn’t so drastic. In the last 2 months I have lost prob 30% of the entire top of my head. It is phycilogically devastating. (sorry I botched that spelling but you know what i mean) Honestly I am so desperate sometimes to stop the shedding I actually think about getting back on Fin. Then I realize how bad of an idea that would be. I am considering saw palmetto to maybe curb the shedding. As I said I AM DESPERATE. I have changed my diet and am taking more vitamins I’ll see if that works.

I found one other post on a different site where the guy seemed to be going thru the same thing: baldtruthtalk.com/showthread.php?t=6202
But I don’t think he was on Fin. He seemed to think its a serum build up.

Sorry for the long post but ANYBODY who has gone through this please respond.

That is the true irony of this drug. I took it as a precaution because I did not want to lose any more hair. Now along with all the other sides I am losing hair like I have a disease.

FUCKING IRONY

Saw Palmetto is a major no no. Based on some users of this forum, it can be as bad and possibly worse than finasteride.

Saw Palmetto is a 5AR inhibitor like Fin. That’s a bad idea.

I use Minoxidil.

I haven’t experienced anything like what you describe where I’ve felt the hair fall out, or been able to easily pull it out, but I can fully sympathise with the issue of shedding. I was on propecia for a lot longer than yourself, therefore in the time since I’ve stopped taking it (about 8 months now) it really has been true to its word and I’ve experienced a hell of a lot of loss, which compunded with some other problems it has caused kind of compounds the shitty nature of it. If I had never taken the fecking drug then I would have lost my hair at a more moderate tempo and come to terms with it gradually, rather than this sick trade off whereby I have spent thousands of pounds, have lost any hair I held on to thanks to propecia in a short space of time, and have other complications thrown in.

my experience is quite similar to yours. i was so desperate and panicky about my hairloss it pushed me to take fin now im a member (sucks)… i was convinced with the success stories posted on hairloss talk. i think it was bound to happen since im quite sensitive about my looks. losing your hair at a young age can make you panic you’ll try anything that’s on the market. i risk taking fin and i lose.

It’s possible your hair is going through a growth cycle. Your follicles remain dormant for months before new hairs are initiated and the old hair falls out. What do your hormone tests put DHT and Test at?

it’s inflammation on your scalp. many people report when they come off fin they get crazy itchiness. it’s DHT actually working the way it’s supposed to but X 10.

although you look at it like a bad thing, its my theory that you can look at it as a good thing regarding PFS.

you dont feel a growth cycle, this is something you are putting your body is making you for a little bit function the way it’s supposed to imo.

if you are worried about inflammation of your scalp, apply topical anti inflammatory’s like bragg’s apple cider vinegar or aloe vera gel. Coconut oil, & emu oil are both really good for hair also.

Guys, I’ve been looking into this really in depth and I think I may have been wrong about what I just about DHT being reactivated. Someone should chime in if they know anything about this or if they can help me look into this.

I think what is happening is that nitric oxide in the body is being turned into something called peroxynitrite. It’s a toxic free radical that is produced from nitric oxide in the body.

It’s chronic fatigue syndrome. Look at the symptoms of this nitric oxide problem and it looks just like PFS:

In further looking… I know methylation has been talked about a lot here. I havne’t done research into it, but I was surprised when I saw it mentioned here in this thread on treating this condition: neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread88850.html

I’m looking into how to fight this… I know this has a part in our problem somehow.
