First, nobody here cares about hairloss anymore – at least not to the extent to ever take a 5AR inhibitor again. Second, what do you think people here will tell you? Hint: it involves looking out for your health, since we’ve suffered from the effects even after quitting.
My opinion is it is not worth the risk of problems from the drug just to save some hair. For many here, they experienced mild side effects on the drug, but upon quitting everything went to hell and their T levels came crashing down within a few weeks after stopping the medication, amongst other issues such as shrinkage, complete loss of libido etc.
Seems you are already experiencing a bunch of side effects as listed in your symptoms checklist – wether you think those are warranted in order to keep hair on your head is ultimately your choice.
The drug has been linked with depression, and despite Merck claiming it “was not drug related by the investigator”, was shown to be associated with a higher incidence of diabetes as well.

While most guys who quit go back to their normal selves within a few weeks/month or two, there are others like us who for whatever reason things just get worse after quitting, after the initial brief recovery a few weeks off. Unfortunately you won’t know what camp you’re in unless you quit, if you do. But on the bright side, again – we are in the minority so likely you shouldn’t have issues post-Fin.
Wether you continue or quit, I advise you to get bloodwork as outlined on this site to see where things are at. It’s the smart thing to do when taking a hormone-altering drug.
Mrbistro, don’t be dumb. Consider yourself lucky for finding this site, and DON’T mess with your prostate! Its one of the most important/problematic things in a man’s body. Its not worth fucking with it.
Tell me this, would you roll the dice to keep your dick or not, because thats what essentially you are doing if you take Finasteride (Propecia). Its equivalent, even to many doctors, to chemical castration.
Again, consider yourself lucky for finding this site, don’t worry about it too much, but taper off that shit!
Also, like others here, you can find ways to style your hair where it does not matter much. You can still have your hair look good, and look good, hot and sexy to girls, even with thinning hair.
I seriously do’t even worry about it much anymore. I’ve just learned how to style it right.
Try cutting it short and trying some different facial hair styles. It looks cool
But dude, don’t fuck with your dick!
Right now its probably the Lexapro talking (I took the same two things for a while). If you weren’t on the stuff, you be like “no way am I taking this stuff.”
Also, my two cents on depression. If it wasn’t some major life event that has made you. or caused depression, I normally believe many are often depressed moreso because of lifestyle, and the way they live the life they lead, or because of some sort of stress. Whether it be pressure from others, i.e. family, friends, society. The way they look, and so they dont get positive feedback from members of the opposite sex. Or because of self-esteem, not being proud, or feeling proud of the life they’re leading.
Anyway, I hope this helps.
I think eventually most are often better off in the long run without the stuff, so don’t think about taking it long term, but think about what changes you can make now, when you’re on it, so that then you may eventually come off of it, and you then wont be depressed.
Peace man!
Hey man!!!
You mentioned you are on Lexapro.
Ive been on it before and i believe it caused my hair loss to start and increase.
I went off of it…Some complain their hair starts to fall out in chunks after being put on it.
Google Lexapro and Hair loss and you will see tons of people with the same situation.
Also i did some research a while back that linked SSRI’s to hair falling out.
Id research that.
Good Luck!
Thanks for the replies guys, i appreciate you taking your time to help me out with your 2 cents. I guess the general consensus on here is that finasteride is evil and causes WAY more problems than it does good. I am just baffled to be honest. How does something created to help the male prostate cause so many problems with the prostate? Ok guys, here is a pill that will help make you more attractive to the opposite sex by helping with your hair loss, but at the same time were going to kill your libido so when it comes down to it you cant perform! What the hell! I am so bummed to find out that the negatives are SOOO horrible! I am still in some denial about the hairloss and want to think that I wont get any of these side effects but unfortunately I am. I am not having as much trouble with the sexual side effects as a lot of the members on this site are reporting but I think I would be making the right decision by quitting.
Boston-your analogy of considering taking propecia as “chemical castration” is a very bold way of putting it! I dont want to run the risk, I look forward to a life full of sex and being able to reproduce.
Razor- I did some research on lexapro and found that only a very small amount ( 1/1000) reported hair loss and that most of it didnt seem very significant. Do you remember where you read that the SSRI cause hair loss? I just started taking it less than a week ago so i would like to find some evidence to substantiate that claim and take it up with my doc so I can try something else. I mentioned to him that i take propecia for my hair and he didnt mention anything to me about the side effects of the lexapro. Anyways, thanks for your input ill continue to look that up!
Jfyi, if you google just about anything and place “and hairloss” next to it, you can find people talking about it causing hairloss. Thats just the internet for ya guys!
