Test Results - High Prolactin but doctor not worried?

Hello…

I have been experiencing ED after being on propecia for about 9 years. Went to the doctor, who did a test for diabetes… testosterone levels were normal (don’t have them handy or I’d post the number.) My prolactin is 16.2 NG/ML (3.0-14.7 is the range). I was taking propecia at the time, I have been off it for a week now. The doc didn’t seem too worried, but this seems high to me after doing research, especially compared to the life extension center’s ranges. Should I get a second opinion, or what can be done to get prolactin back in range? Thanks…

Kevin

hey man, i don’t know if you’ll find this helpful. however, i went to the doc a while back, he took some blood tests, and when i saw him again a week ago he said that they were all normal except for prolactin which was elevated (i don’t have the units but the reference range was 40-320 and i had 420). He said he believed this to be the cause of my loss of libido and erection difficulties. what he told me to do was to try the best i could to not think about sex for 5 weeks, try not to feel any pressure. He told me stress could sometimes elevate prolactin so stressing was just going to keep me in the vicious cycle. He also did some other tests to find out if something else might cause the elevated levels, but until my next visit i’m just doing as he says.

edit: i’m sorry, i didn’t see that you’ve only been off propecia for a week. you recover fairly soon so you should definitely not be worrying yet.

Hi guys,

Doctors usually react to high prolactin levels only when they are really high, like many times the higher end of the reference range.

The propable reason because your prolactin is a bit high, is that when dopamine is low, prolactin is high, and vica versa. I too had my prolactin level a bit elevated 2 years ago, but last month it was perfectly in the middle of the range. During the last half year, I have been trying to boost my dopamine. Unfortunately my laptop is broken and I do not have any links in hand about the dopamine-prolactin relationship currently, but search the internet and you will find it. After you have supplemented yourselves with tyrosine, phenylalanine etc. dopamine precursors, your prolactin will be in the range.

i’ve actually taken some tyrosine and phenylalanine. Dynaaminen, for how long did you take it before your levels normalized?

I took tyrosine 5-6 months before I had my prolactin tested again, and it was normal. I am still on tyrosine.
