Hello everyone. I am 17 years old and I have been on propecia for about 8-10 months. I was 16 years old when I started but I have recently turned 17. I starting noticing some negative side effects sexually, so I have recently stopped. The side effects are minor and I am glad that I knew that there were potential side effects, so I can stop in time. What I want to know is how long till what propecia kept on my head is lost? I was also wondering how fast the average male balds anyways. I just want to somewhat keep my hair for one more year, because I am in highschool and I don’t like the idea of people staring at me. (more than they do)

Regardless, you will likely lose any gains you made on Finasteride within 12 months.
This is wholly dependent upon genetics of the individual and to a much smaller extent, diet. Everyone is different – some guys go bald within a few years, other take decades.
Congrats on your decision to quit the drug if you were beginnign to experience side effects, hopefully you have no further problems. I can’t believe you were prescribed the drug at such a young, still developing age, but ignorant doctors know no bounds it seems.

Yes, I would. I’d tell them why you are getting off. And I’d suggest you actually WEEN yourself off over the course of say 2 months or so by slowly reducing both your dosage and days you take it, ie every 2nd day, every 3rd, every 5th, every 7th.
My honest opinion would be to take blood tests WHILE you are on the drug to see what is is doing to you, then again a month after you quit. The tests to get are listed in the blood tests section of this site.
If your doc wont give all the tests, make sure you get at the very least: Total Testosterone, Free or Bioavailable Testosterone, LH, FSH, Estradiol, SHBG and TSH.

dranseth, since you also took it at a fairly young age. Did you grow some more in height after taking finasteride? It seems to have slowed down my growth. How tall are you know and do you know if you grew any more while taking finasteride?
I was done growing upwards when I started propecia, and I am the same height (6ft). Mew, my doctor is suggesting totally quiting propecia for a couple weeks, then seeing if my problems go away, to see if propecia is the cause of my problems.
Well yes, you can quit cold turkey, its up to you… just might be a sudden shock to your system, that’s all.
My doctor said that he doesn’t think this is happening from the propecia. How can I suddenl have sexual difficulties, especially since I am 17 years old? I have the side effects that the drug is known to give, yet I didn’t get it from propecia? I’m actually scared now. Also, why does propecia give some people pain in the testes?
Dude, the drug is bad news! Listen to Mew, and all the other 200 people on this site. IT CAN CAUSE BAD SIDE EFFECTS TO YOUR BALLZ & DICK, EVEN AFTER STOPPING! Do you want to take this risk, no of course not. ANd especially since now you’ve found this site. ALso, most doctors DO NOT KNOW!! Or refuse to acknowledge. Probably because they wouldn’t be able to sleep any more at night probably because they’ve prescribed it to hundreds of people already, and still do.

I don’t know if I’d take 2 months. I’d probably split the pills into halves and quarters, and take halves for a week to ten days, then maybe quarters for about three weeks, and then quit, or something like that. However you think. But don’t just quit cold turkey. Or take Mew’s advice.
Your 17 y.o… 17y.o.'s don’t have sexual problems(very rare). You took a drug that says one of the side effects is sexual problems. Of course it’s the propecia. Why are these doctors looking for zebras.
Yeah, I quit it. It’s been two days since I stopped taking it. I can still achieve an erection, orgasm and there isn’t a drop in the amount of sperm I ejaculate. My orgasm isn’t nearly as good as it used to be, my erection is weak and it doesn’t come up randomly or when I want it to. I hate this.
Ween off it dude, I’m tellin you. At least take quarters of a pill for two weeks, or something, then stop.

Because although we can’t prove it, we believe stopping cold turkey may have overwhelmed our systems by throwing the HTPA axis out of whack all at once.
You need to give your system time to adjust to coming off such a powerful drug that has been surpressing DHT, because DHT will flood back into your system once you do within a week or two.
If you ween yourself off, the shock to your system won’t be as great and hopefully nothing bad will happen as a result. Also, some guys get major withdrawal symptoms… up to you but looking back I wish I had weened off for sure.
okay, I already missed two days, but I will take your suggestion. Unless of course you think it’s too late, since this is my third day. Maybe I should take .5mg for the first week then gradually get lower and lower?
If you have been taking 1mg, then yea, I’d cut down to 0.5mg every 2nd day for a week, then down to 0.25mg (quartered pill) for the next 2 or 3… I’d also increase to every 3rd and 5th day with each week.
