  1. What (if any) treatments have you undertaken to recover from your side effects since discontinuation of the drug?

See above: weened myself off the drug, then used cialis and pomegranate juice during the recovery period

  1. If you have pre or post-Finasteride bloodtests, what hormonal changes have you encountered since discontinuing the drug (pls post your test results in the “Blood Tests” section and link to them in your post)?

See above: In May 2013 I took a hormone test with a local endocrinologist. Estradiol 40.1 pg/ml (according to doc, normal: 15-45, so in the range but high), Testosterone: 613 ng/dL (according to doc, normal: 280-800, so in the range.) I had taken a testosterone test in 2007 for a different reason and while I don’t remember the number, the doc had told me it was high and above average. Being now in the mid-range, and high for estrogen, got me worried.

  1. Anything not listed in the above questions you’d like to share about your experience with Finasteride?
  1. Tell us your story, in your own words, about your Finasteride usage and side effects experienced while on/off the drug.

Born 1980. I started taking generic fin and later branded propecia for better results in 2010. I’m unsure which month. Months later, I noticed slight man boobs but figured it was just due to having put on some weight. When I lost weight, there was no gyno visible. No problems with sexuality, libido or erections except thinner sperm (a less dense liquid it seemed).

In February 2013 I started to notice very serious gyno when leaning over the sink to brush my teeth. Again I attributed it to having put on some weight, however this time after losing the weight the gyno did not disappear. A couple of months later I also noticed a sharp decline in sex drive and difficulty with erections.

In May 2013 I took a hormone test with a local endocrinologist.

I weened off propecia, reducing dosage from 1 mg by 25% every 5 days. After a month off propecia I still had problems with low libido, difficulty with erections, sometimes only getting half hard, taking a long time to achieve orgasm, very difficult to orgasm with condoms (had never bothered me in the slightest before).

I started to take cialis and gradually weened myself off it as I switched to pure 100% raw pomegranate juice. A friend of mine had used it as an experiment for a month and reported it has similar effects to cialis. After a while, my erections were back to normal, though sensitivity was still low and taking a long time to achieve orgasm, especially with condoms.

About a month ago, March 2014, I started to note a reduction in erections again, until yesterday it got to a point where I couldn’t get an erection without a lot of prolonged stimulation (both visual and physical). That’s when I panicked and started to research again.

A couple of things…

  1. I’m trying to focus on the positive and not read too many horror stories as I do believe the mental part of the equation to be a significant factor, obviously not for gyno but definitely for libido. I’m reading the entire recovery section right now. Please NO gloom and doom posts. They won’t help me but only cause further damage psychologically. I’m depressed enough as it is.

  2. I can’t believe that stories like mine and worse have been posted on this board since YEARS before I started taking this drug. I can not even begin to tell you guys how angry I am at the drug companies. As stated by many on this site, the ONLY reason why I took the risk on fin/propecia was the explicit claim that sides were rare and, if they should occur, will recede upon cessation of use. I would NEVER have taken this risk had I known about it… NO way. I can live with a shaved head, I can’t live with a limp member. The opposite sex certainly is one of man’s greatest joys and my drive used to be exceptionally HIGH, now nearly gone.

  3. An acquaintance of mine also took propecia around the same time and to the best of my knowledge continues to do so. He does not believe in the sides but I do know that he hardly wants to ever have sex anymore, and he is in his mid 20s and used to be all about it… had little else on his mind other than sex before propecia. He never used contraception with his girl-friend of 2 years and she never got pregnant. That’s all I know about his case, unfortunately we’re no longer in touch.

Speculation:

I started to notice serious problems with propecia when I lived in Thailand. In an unrelated discussion, a friend of mine brought up the speculation that Thailand has a very high number of ladyboys due to chemicals in its environment and water. Quote from a Yahoo answers post:

I did indeed have takeaway food almost daily in Thailand, which is usually hot chicken soup in a plastic bag (dumb I know). The Thais seem to love their chemicals - when house keeping cleans a room, it has a strong smell afterwards. Styrofoam everywhere. As I mentioned, my problems resurfaced over the past couple of weeks, and incidentally I came back to Thailand 8 weeks ago. I hadn’t been in the country during my recovery. So, I speculate that propecia’s side effects get worse for me when I’m exposed to these chemicals that mimic estrogen in the human body.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenoestrogen

Of course it’s hard to be certain. I’m taking another testosterone and estrogen test tomorrow, and I’ll likely leave the country again to see what happens. The day before I came back to Thailand I remember having a very high drive and up to 4 orgasms per day. It looks like I had recovered and xenoestrogens crashed me again. I could be wrong and it could also be partly in my head of course, but certainly not entirely. While I’m staying away from soup delivery in plastic bags, I still need to drink water and it always comes in plastic containers here. God knows if they were left in the tropical sun for a day before they got delivered to the store.

A couple of months ago I noticed that I have a bald spot above my right knee. I never made the connection but yesterday I realized it got bigger and I suddenly have a second bald spot on the side of my left knee. I googled it and couldn’t find anything, all pages I found on Google were about bald spots on the calfs, not above the knee.

I had another blood test today since the symptoms came back over the past couple of weeks. Testosterone is on the low side. Even lower than when I first crashed in May 2013.
579 ng/dL = 16.80 nmol/L I’d like to see at least 700. It was just over 600 last year.
Estrogen is lower than last test. 105.61 pmol/L. I think that’s pretty good.

I read a hairloss forum where I used to post a couple of years ago and realized I actually started taking finasteride in 2009, not 2010. Unsure which month but it was the summer. Maybe August. I read through some of my other journal entries and remember sex drive was still incredibly high in January 2013. Crashed in May that year, as described above, noted the gyno and the loss of libido so came off it.

I found an inspiring recovery story on here yesterday, and I’m going to follow this method:
viewtopic.php?f=22&t=8271

I’m still not 100% recovered… I haven’t done a lot to work towards a recovery to be honest as I was and still am 70% recovered which was annoying but bearable for me and my business took up most of my time.

Where I stand now: I have enough gyno that girls I pick up consistently make fun of it. It actually looks just like nicely developed pecs when I wear a shirt, but it’s soft and gross… especially when I bend over to brush my teeth. Annoying!

My sex drive is low… kinda like how I used to feel after a night of sex, not really in the mood the next day. I feel that way all the time now. I also have reduced sensitivity - struggle coming with condoms, especially on round two but sometimes even on round one. My penis has shrunk a little too.

I’m going to take this bull by the horns now, as per the cdnuts protocol:

This protocol has been picked up again by user “5 alpha” here:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=10342

As of Saturday, April 11th, I have cut all junk out of my diet (simple carbs, sugars, fast food, pizza, soft drinks, and so forth). I have also switched to a combination of intermittent fasting, paleo and car back loading. That means I don’t eat the first 4 hours after waking up, then I have 4 small meals, one every 2 1/2 hours, and also don’t eat the last 4 hours before going to bed. All these meals are very strict paleo. The first three have no carbs at all, the last has carbs but only white rice or potatoes.

Tomorrow I’ll start adding workouts. Calisthenics and high intensity interval training.

In early May I will fly to Chicago to do a supervised juice fast. I’m also considering the water fast cdnuts advocated, but I’ll start with a juice fast first.

I have not yet started on supplements or any PCT… I’m still reading up on all that.

I did get a blood test done… I will post results later. Testosterone is in the 500 range, free T is high with 2.9% though I remember that. Estrogen is high also unfortunately, though not a big surprise since I have gyno.

I have a friend who’s a real testosterone nut. Works out 20 hours a week, football, martial arts, super clean eater, all that… he spends all his free time reading about this kinda thing. He said the main issue with T is muscle/fat ratio. Muscle regulates testosterone production up, while high body fat aromatizes testosterone into estrogen. So gotta get in shape.

That’s it for now… I’ll be journaling here a bit, maybe I can get some useful feedback (nay sayers don’t post, I am going to try cdnuts protocol even if you don’t believe in it… you will not be heard). Or maybe this will be useful to someone else in the future once I have fully recovered, which I have no doubt in my mind that I will given that it’s been done by several other people here who had the will power to follow the protocol.

Cheers,
Pomegranate.

I wish you the best of luck. It’s awesome to see someone on this website who still believes they can recover with out “waiting for the studies”.

Based on the info from your above posts about how you have curruntly achieved 70 percent recovery with out even making major life style changes I feel like you have a pretty good shot at 100 percent recovery.

Sounds like you are closer to recovery all around when compared to myself. I never developed gyno and or high estrogen levels in result of my crash but my present day ED is deff worse, I’m lucky if I can say im 50 percent revoved in that department. I also have an inflamed prostate and have been officially dignosed with BPH which deff does not help my situation.

Anyway I’m looking forward to following your progress. Please keep updating when ever possible.

In early May im going to run my first DHT prohormone cycle. I’m using andro300. I’ll update on my experience

swolesource.com/forum/mobile.php?do=login

That’s the website that I found CDNUTS and other former members on.

I announced that I’m not logging on to that website again until I’m recovered.

It was made obvious to me that they don’t like PH members on their.

This guy who goes by the name of English even stated that he was no longer enjoying his time their anymore because of PH guys going over their. The bs thing about it is that English him self is a former member on this website as well.

Anyways I figure that I learned a lot from that website for the short time I was their. I’d rather take what I learned and use It here hopefully with at least a few others who share the same mindset of still wanting to recover.

Cool, thanks man… Will definitely keep this thread updated. Yeah I’m not as bad as some. Though another thing that I have not posted is I lost my zest for life. Used to really get excited about things… travel, girls, going out, now everything’s kinda meh.

Latest update is… I have fucking cand1da. Oral candidiasis to be precise. That probably explains the phantom smells I posted about on the other thread (cdnuts had phantom smells early in his recovery). Oral candidiasis can be due to problems with the endocryn system, though in my case I think it’s due to life style issues… unhealthy eating habits (too much simple carbs and sugars) and probably caught it from oral sex. But I’m still including it in this journal because it will change my diet.

I’m going zero carb now… to starve the cand1da. Also treating it with some anti fungal thing. A bit off topic here, but since it’s a change in my meal plan I thought I’d mention it. I’m now zero carb paleo (only greens, meat and fats basically), plus intermittent fasting. Will do that for a few weeks and see how things improve. It also means I can’t really go on a juice fast retreat now because they do a lot of fruit in the juices, which would feed the cand1da.

All very annoying, but I think healthy living is the answer, 100% compliance at least for a few months. Was a big lesson though, I’ll definitely be much more careful with my health. I’ll check out that other forum too, thanks for the link… if I ever post I won’t mention PFS.

P.S.: Did you see my mail? Seems your other thread was not deleted, just moved:
