The microbial degradation pathways seen in this study also occur in the intestine of humans and wildlife, where the native bacterial flora could provide the appropriate enzymes for steroid biosynthesis.

This is pretty fascinating. I didn’t know that there could be progesterone and hormones being metabolized by random bacteria in a stream!
