An SB Nation user who calls himself Ubiquitous Squid tells his story on the ever popular sports site’s Fan Post’s section.
He notes that:
“The condition I suffer from is called post-finasteride syndrome (PFS), which develops in a certain number of men after taking the prescription drug finasteride, which is marketed for the treatment of hair loss under the name Propecia and for the treatment of bengin prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) under the name Proscar. PFS manifests in wide array of neurological, endocrinological, and urological symptoms, some of which include sexual dysfunction, cognitive impairments, insomnia, fatigue, muscle atrophy, inability to gain muscle/shed fat, changes in sweating patterns, depression, anxiety, and loss of libido. With sexual dysfunction and insomnia being the major exceptions, I suffer from all of these symptoms, as well as several others I haven’t mentioned; many guys suffer from all of them and more. As you might expect, this condition has taken a sledgehammer to my life: In the time immediately before taking finasteride, I was 27 and enjoying a blossoming career as a book editor in New York City. Today, I’m a disabled 31-year-old who is unable to support himself and lives with a family member in a neighboring state.”
