Oxaloacetate and the Brain

I’ve been using an Oxaloacetate supplement as it is said to help lower glutamate in the brain. I’m coupling it with L-Theanine to help with sleep. Whilst researching it I found a great study that showed more benefits to the brain:

Oxaloacetate activates brain mitochondrial biogenesis, enhances the insulin pathway, reduces inflammation and stimulates neurogenesis.

Abstract

Brain bioenergetic function declines in some neurodegenerative diseases, this may influence other pathologies and administering bioenergetic intermediates could have therapeutic value. To test how one intermediate, oxaloacetate (OAA) affects brain bioenergetics, insulin signaling, inflammation and neurogenesis, we administered intraperitoneal OAA, 1-2 g/kg once per day for 1-2 weeks, to C57Bl/6 mice. OAA altered levels, distributions or post-translational modifications of mRNA and proteins (proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1α, PGC1 related co-activator, nuclear respiratory factor 1, transcription factor A of the mitochondria, cytochrome oxidase subunit 4 isoform 1, cAMP-response element binding, p38 MAPK and adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase) in ways that should promote mitochondrial biogenesis. OAA increased Akt, mammalian target of rapamycin and P70S6K phosphorylation. OAA lowered nuclear factor κB nucleus-to-cytoplasm ratios and CCL11 mRNA. Hippocampal vascular endothelial growth factor mRNA, doublecortin mRNA, doublecortin protein, doublecortin-positive neuron counts and neurite length increased in OAA-treated mice. (1)H-MRS showed OAA increased brain lactate, GABA and glutathione thereby demonstrating metabolic changes are detectable in vivo. In mice, OAA promotes brain mitochondrial biogenesis, activates the insulin signaling pathway, reduces neuroinflammation and activates hippocampal neurogenesis.

There is much more out there on the web.

I purchase my sup from Bulletproof- Upgraded Aging Formula.

How long have you taken it and what effects have you noticed that it has had on you?

Better sleep, less tinitus and improvements in brain fog.

Please could you descrive your type of insomnia and what aspects of it have recovered using these suplements?

You can read about my sleep issues here:

I sent you an private message, but don’t know if you ever got it. The messaging system was being all kinds of weird. I was just wondering how your brain fog is these days and what has been helping you deal with it? Is Oxaloacetate still working out for you?

Had some messages here about BUF.

Here is my response:

“Hey, yep still taking this, only because it lowers a glutamate overload and I am concerned about our lack of gaba leading to neurons becoming over-excited and dying- glutamate excitoxicity. I’m also doing the ketogenic diet, and taking seriphos to kill surging cortisol. Mag threonate to up levels of magnesium in the brain. I’ve read up on the BAG, which I posted, and feel its a healthy choice for me. I noticed it stop the constant buzz/ringing I felt in my brain (that feeling as if your brain is frying) that is very distinct from tinitus. It wasn’t in my ears, it was in my forehead! That it stopped so I do think it lowers glutamate and lessened my brain fog- made me less frazzled. I couple it with theanine and mag T (above) so its all synergistic. Give it a go if you are sleeping badly, have brain fog and feel/hear that sizzling/ringing in your brain. HTH.”

Hi Jamie, if you don’t mind could you please describe your brain fog before you started using this supplement?

How much do you take a day?

Hi JamieLondon,

I was thinking about your OxaloAcetate supplement and the improvements with Broccoli, Beets, Spinach, and I was wondering if the connection was Oxalate or Oxalate Acid.

This could mean we have impaired Krebs Cycle.

How much Oxaloacetate are you taking and could you say which supplement brand? Thanks a lot!

Hi,

I take betwen 100-300 mg, depending on how severe the ringing is.

I use Bulletproof’s Upgraded Aging Formula.
