Not worth it.

“Propecia prevents DHT conversion in the muscles. Propecia is an enzyme blocking agent, it prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone or DHT, which plays a crucial role in both sex drive and the growth of muscle tissue. Since DHT is responsible for muscle-building at the receptor level, it does not help to have testosterone available if it cannot be used. Many men have plenty of testosterone but cannot build muscle because it is not available. The reason sex drive is suppressed with Propecia is the same, less DHT. Though Propecia has prevented millions from hair loss, research finds that Propecia does prevent testosterone conversion to muscle and may even inhibit sex drive.”

I’m an idiot for going out and buying two months worth of Propecia. I’m an even bigger idiot for getting started on the drug. I’ve read the horror stories on the Internet about the drug and its possibilities of sexual side effects, in some cases being irreversible, yet I still thought being part of that “two percent” of men would be unlucky. I guess I just wanted to try; the drug was proven to be the most effective, convenient and at the end of the day I believed the statistics were true.

My GP is an idiot, doctors online are idiots, many people on this subject are idiots. They say “I don’t know why it affects the sex drive of some men”. The sex drive is decreased because DHT which plays a role in the sex drive is decreased. Sometimes, more likely if the drug is taken over a longer period of time I’d imagine, it causes irreversible side effects because it plays on the nervous system.

I’ve only taken the drug for the past 5 days; it would be impossible that I did any irreversible damage seeing that it is the same amount as in one pill of Proscar. I’m getting off the shit. I’ll talk to a dermatologist soon, and hopefully find something else without the risk of sexual side effects, which will obviously be less convenient, less effective, but with a much larger piece of mind.

I’m experiencing a subtle testicular pain, which is scary because it could be playing with the nervous system, and I’m quite sure a decrease in libido. Even if these were to subside over the next month with the drug or whatever, it’s not worth the risk and worry. All the “what ifs” on irreversible side effects, and not knowing if you’re sexual performance is being affected over time is just not worth it.

I read one ignorant, pathetic article that claimed the men who would have reported the sexual side effects, would have had low sex drives to begin with. With the far more research I’ve done, I’d say the opposite. Most men don’t have an avid sex drive and therefore may not notice the slight decrease in libido, especially over time.

I just can’t believe the irony, seems like such an effective, easy to use drug for hair loss, and ever so conveniently, its side effects just had to be sexual dysfunction. Mockery isn’t it?

Hey, its midnight, time for my next dose… screw it.

Anyone know whats 2nd best to Propecia? (without the sexual disfunctions)

wrong forum buddy. go to a hair loss forum for that info…although they will suggest propecia and say this forum (amongs other propecia haters) is a bunch of crazy hypochonriacs.

good luck.

No kidding it’s not worth it. Unfortunately many of us continued on with it thinking our side effects would abate (as mentioned by Merck) and if not, definitely resolve after quitting (also as mentioned by Merck)… which has not been the case.

The sooner you can get off, if you have made that decision to do so, the better. As for hair, hairlosstalk.com or hairlosshelp.com are your best bets for more info.

Cheers,

Mew.

Yes, Merck says that side effects go away once the drug is stopped, but do they give a time frame i.e. a few days, a week, a month, several months?

Additionally, is the time it take for side effects to go away related at all to the amount of time on Propecia? I.e. if someone took Propecia for 2 months, their side effects might take 2 months to go away, and if someone took it for 2 years, it might take 2 years to go away. However I think the reason why someone only takes the drug for a brief period of time is b/c they notice side effects at the onset, whereas someone who takes it longer either has no side effects for a while or any side effects that exhibited themselves went away while still on the drug.
