My sleep is so broken that I wake up every 2 hours (roughly the length of one sleep cycle). I am always dreaming so I imagine I always wake up during or after REM sleep.
I have noticed that the quality of my nocturnal erections improves with each awakening. Over the past few days, the typical sequence is:
1st awakening - limp
2nd awakening - semi
3rd awakening - poor/decent erection
4th awakening - poor/decent erection
I know that REM cycles get longer in later sleep cycles, but since my sleep is broken and I regularly awake at 2 hour intervals, I don’t think that applies to me. I am thinking that either:
- Neurotransmitters are progressively replenished as I sleep. They build up and my body becomes more physiologically normal in the later sleep cycles. REM sleep is when the body replenishes neurotransmitters as far as I know.
- The sympathetic nervous system is more successfully inhibited the longer I sleep.
I am leaning toward 1. That would explain why many users state that their symptoms are better in the morning. Has anyone else noticed this?
