New to the board. Have some questions about finasteride.

Hello everyone. I stumbled upon this site the other day and it’s definitely brought up some questions and information about finasteride that I didn’t know. Currently, I am taking finasteride for hair loss. Right now I’m 27 and started taking it when I was 17 (no one wants to go bald in highschool.) My question is this: is there anything wrong with still taking it if I really haven’t noticed any side effects? I mean, I’ve been taking it for 10 years now. Now that I think back on it, I do have less motivation than I did when I was in highschool, nothing serious, I just know I can be more lazy than I should. No REAL sexual side effects, occassionally I have sex as much as 5 times a day with my wife. However, I don’t really get as “excited” as I used to.

In all seriousness, are there things I SHOULD be concerned about that I could be doing to myself by taking this drug? Or is it one of those things where for some people, it just isn’t that big of a deal? I mean, I have been taking it for 10 YEARS. I am hoping I haven’t done something bad to myself, and if so, I don’t want to continue doing it. So are there things that may not be seen or felt that might come into play down the road?

My health and future are worth more than my hair.

If you don’t have problems and you are still taking the drug there is no reason for you to be here. Everyone here experienced side effects on the drug, then quit… but the side effects did not resolve.

You should read through the Finasteride Studies/Other Studies section of this website as well as the FAQ at the top of this forum, then make up your own mind wether you want to continue with the drug.

Nobody really knows what the longterm effects are for young men that deprive their bodies of DHT… right now you are fine but who knows what could happen in 20-30 years.

Be aware that Finasteride does more than just reduce DHT, it also affects various neurotransmitters/neurosteroids in the brain (allopregnanlone, GABAA, THDOC, etc)… consequences of this longterm are again, unknown.

Do your reading but I’d say if you can have sex 5 times a day then you probably won’t find much help here. Best of luck.

You may want to get a blood test to at least check how your hormone levels are doing.

Although Merck claims that all hormones except DHT stay within physiological levels, this has not been the case for anyone here.

I would at least check for low testosterone/free T levels.

Although you may not be doing too bad sexually, if you now have low T, you could be predisposing yourself to a number of serious conditions (cardiac disease, alzeimer’s, metabolic syndrome, to name a few).

If you can have sex 5x a day than you don’t need any help
