New Study- Neuroprotection by steroids after neurotrauma....

I am going to cry. Yet another study purposefully using Finasteride to destroy/abolish/obliterate the protective affects of Progesterone and its 5ar Metabolites (Allo). The reduction in the CNS of Progesterone 5ar metabolites spoken about in this study is EXACLY the finding in the Italian Neurosteroid Conference.

Neuroprotection by steroids after neurotrauma in organotypic spinal cord cultures: A key role for progesterone receptors and steroidal modulators of GABAA receptors

Where does this say anything about finasteride “destroying” the protective effects of progesterone? All I could see was a reference to finasteride being used to stop the conversion of prog to it’s metabites, which actually allowed them to show the protective effects of prog.

Maybe I’m missing something?

“The neuroprotective effects of progesterone required PR as they could not be observed in slices from homozygous knockout PR mice”

The below study explains it better I think

Yeah that one does a better job. The biggest question I have with this line of thinking is the failure to explain why so many people are fine while taking finasteride until after stopping it. If finasteride’s ability to cancel out the positive effects of prog were the reason behind what we’re dealing with, it seems like the negative side effects would come about while on the drug, not after stopping it.

yeah that is a good question indeed. I have thought a few theories on why this may be. I was on the drug for 9 years with no NOTICEABLE attributed side effects. Crashed after final pill. However now that I look back after my first pill I stopped having night time and random erections. I never really thought of it. Also my teeth and gums were deteriorating rapidly which I now attribute it to Finasteride. However, I was very sexual, muscular, energetic so I never thought of propecia as a problem. So my theory is basically it affects everyone, The degree to which it affects seems different. Also perhaps there is different concentrations in people’s brain. Perhaps some people have higher concentrations of it and as such inhibition of prog/allo does very little. It is an anti-anxiety, calming hormone, so maybe those who crash had lower concentrations in the brain/CNS. Were you a very anxious person growing up? Have anxiety? Seems to be a general attirbute to many people including myself on this site.

i just want to add my own personal experience … i used finasteride for exactly 80 days and experienced very severe side effects WHILE ON the drug, and THAT is why I quit

Yeah I had some anxiety before taking propecia. Always had trouble falling asleep. Anxiety runs in my family pretty seriously. Interestingly, I now never have anxiety at all. After the first couple weeks post-crash where I could never sleep, now I fall asleep almost immediately every night. It used to take me an hour or more. I never thought I’d be frustrated by my ability to fall asleep quickly…

I do think that there has to be consequences for taking this drug, not just for the ones who get noticeable side effects. It can’t be healthy to alter your brain chemistry for years. The big question though is why the crash for some people? Why, like me, can you take two pills and never recover? It definitely seems to me like there is some “switch” that has been turned off when 5ar resynthesized, whcih is causing all of these symptoms. Hopefully, the research can find that switch.

Well that was sort of my point, everyone could be affected upon first pill, the degree to which might be based on the concentration in the brain, perhaps for some like yourself once there is an immediate crossing of the brain barrier, it is instantaneous. One guy took one pill and ran to the bathroom throwing up and severe testicle pain. The studies I have posted could at least explain this immediate affect on people, this instantaneous abolishment of protective effects. Lets all pray they figure this out soon
