New Quitter... some questions

I just quit Propecia yesterday after 10 years This site is very informative and helped me quit. Thank you all. This site also scares the hell out of me.

I know I had decreased and liquid ejaculate. That is the only side effect I can say with conviction came from Propecia.

I have experienced a slight loss in libido. (I’m 40 now so I’m not sure if it is just getting older.)

I have also experience some depression, fog, slight memory loss. I have diabetic symptoms (dehydration) with no diabetes. I also have stomach problems. Not sure if these are related to Propecia or not.

I have a few questions.

  1. What is the likelihood that these side effects will not go away?

  2. Does anybody share any of these side effects? Especially the diabetes symptoms. Seem weird to me.

  3. I am using Nioxin as well. Are there any risks associated with that?

Thank you for you help in advance. I appreciate your work on here and feel bad about your suffering.

Before taking that leap you should get bloodwork done to see what the drug has been doing to your hormones. List is in FAQ at top of site or Hormones & Bloodtests section. You might also want to consider weening off, after such a long period of use. Nobody knows if weening makes any difference but read FAQ for more info.

You could possibly resume taking Finasteride until you get blood tests taken, if you feel the tests are necessary (if I could do things again, I certainly would have gotten them before quitting). If things go to hell after quitting, you’ll have some numbers to compare against from when you were on the drug – this is especially important when dealing with doctors who disbelieve your case and play things down as psychological in nature.

Finasteride inhibits neurosteroid production in the brain.

Finasteride inhibits DHT, which usually mediates Nitric Oxide synthase and NO release:

Not only is NO crucial for proper erectile function, it’s also implicated in sleep, memory and gonadotropin secretion:

If you believe Merck’s 2% of people get side effects and all are reversible after quitting – then they should go away.

However, since we know that is a lie, the odds are that “most likely” they probably will. We on this site are in the minority in that they did not.

Nobody can give you an exact figure since each person’s body will react differently once DHT comes back online in the coming week, should you remain off the drug.

Lots of people here suffer from shared common symptoms, please review the Symptoms template at top of Member Stories section and also here: propeciahelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=381

Merck noted an increase in diabetes taking the drug but of course they state this was “not clinically significant”.

This is not a hairloss site so please do not ask questions related to hairloss products. However to my knowledge there are no adverse risks from Nioxin.

I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my questions.

3 months passed but no visible shedding… whats wrong?

What is the best diet to prevent Diabetes? Diabetes runs very strong in my family. My grandmother had her leg amputated because of it and now my mother has it. Is there a good strict diet or eating plan out there so that I can lower my chances of getting it? Ive already started monitoring my blood sugar on a daily basis. Im only 21 and so its better to start young. I want a long, happy and healthy life.
