Hello everyone. I am sorry I cannot say it is a happy reason why I am here. I will let you briefly know my story.

I am a 31-year-old male. I used propecia for hair loss for roughly 7 years when I first started losing my hair. I stopped about 4 months ago.

I have always had a concern about the potential side effects of propecia on the male reproductive system. So I was always proactive. While I was on the drug, my semen was sometimes lumpy and weird looking. However when I personally examined them under a microscope they appeared normal.

That was until about a year ago. While I was examining my semen for count and mobility, I noticed there was not the normal amount. I immediately saw a urologist. They performed a more through semen analysis and the results were not so good. Although I still am producing sperm, the count has dropped a lot. I am about at 1/3 the normal amount.
( I was told I am at 30, normal 75-100)

So here I am on this site looking for help. I believe the propecia may have played a major role in my loss of sperm count. That is why I discontinued the medication. So now I have some questions if anyone can help me.

Has anyone who experienced low sperm count after propecia use regained their sperm count back to normal?
If so how long does it take sperm counts to return to normal?
Do I stand a chance to regain normal male fertility?

Are there any good links or stories on this site that may help me gain more information on propecia’s effect on sperm counts?

Are there any treatments for a low male fertility?
Can I still father a child if I have low sperm?

What are blood tests about, and how do you talk to your dr. about getting one?

Hello, welcome to the forum.

Yes, there are men out there who have, as documented in the below links.

Could take a few months at least.

Yes most likely, the drug’s effects should reverse once it’s stopped. You did not mention the specific point in time when you took your last exam, was it WHILE you were on Finasteride, or since stopping? Since it’s been 4 months off the drug, you might want to get retested.

Check Finasteride Studies section at top of site:

Here is another guy going through same issue as you, read through entire thread:
hairlosstalk.com/interact/vi … 46&t=29146

Yes:

  • hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin)
  • hMG (human menopausal gonadotropin)
  • Clomid (clomiphene citrate)

Speak to a urologist/fertility expert about these things if you get retested, have a low count, and do not want to wait and see if time corrects the issue.

Yes but it may be more difficult for fertilization to occur due to low sperm count (if you even still have a low count).

The blood tests are to evaluate what effect Finasteride was having on your body, hormonally-speaking.

You request them from your doctor, but you should do some reading (ie, Google them) to understand their purpose so you can argue your case if need be.

Recommended tests are here:
propeciahelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=92

In your case and in addition to the other hormones, FSH (Follicular Stimulating Hormone) would be critical to test to evaluate for fertility reasons. Also, testing for Inhibin B might shed some light if you are having fertility issues.

Thanks for the quick reply.

If you have time, can you elaborate on what tests I should talk about with the Urologist? For example is FSH and Inhibin B test drawn from a simple blood test? how can I bring it up?

Also should I bother researching supplements, pills, or herbs to treat my low fertility?

I have a bad opinion on herbal treatments. Mainly from my research of herbs to treat MPB back when I was concerned about that.

First, you still did not answer my initial question:

  • You did not mention the specific point in time when you took your last fertility test – was it WHILE you were on Finasteride, or since stopping (how many months post-Fin)?

Reason I ask is, how can you know if you have fertility issues TODAY (4 months later after quitting), if you got tested a year ago when you were on the drug? You need to get retested again to see where things stand TODAY.

IF there’s still a problem, THEN the below comments would apply.

The “recommended” short list in the link I provided should suffice, as the complete list is obviously daunting to most doctors and they question why you are requesting such things.

If you haven’t already, please read the FAQ at top of site for answers to common questions like this post-Finasteride.

Yes. All of the tests listed are blood tests.

You need to present your case/argument in order to convince them, if they do not believe the drug can cause these issues.

If after having a fertility RETEST TODAY or in next few weeks that show you are STILL having sperm motility/count problems… my suggestion is print off the materials I provided to you, highlight the relevant passages about Finasteride and DHT inhibition causing fertility issues, and request blood tests to see what is going on hormonally post-Fin.

If he is unwilling to listen find another doctor who recognizes the dangers of Finasteride that will do the tests, or offer to pay for them yourself. You need to research and understand the issue and argue for treatment because most docs do not think, or do not know, that Finasteride can cause these kinds of issues. That is why the Studies are so vital, as they provide direct evidence that this is not “made up” or “in your head”.

Thus, educating them with relevant materials can help open their eyes and hopefully, help you get treatment.

Sorry. My mind was just a bit filled up with all the information.

I have done 2 tests the first one was about 2 weeks after I stopped propecia. The second was about 3 months after. For the one 3 months after, I have only talked to the nurse and not to the DR yet. So I only know the count was low and there were some “abnormalities”.

I don’t have the actual numbers but I will have them next week when I see the Dr. in person.

BTW, thanks so much for helping. I am going to print out, read and bring the material with me to the DR. next week to talk about blood tests and my hormone levels.

Also can you help me decode this (from the articles)? - “5.5 2 106/mL” - this sort on numerology is used when referencing sperm count, I am not sure how to interpret it.

I’m not sure on the exact meaning of the numbers (sperm count, motility?), this is a question for the doctor. However, the KEY POINT is that the numbers rose after quitting Finasteride, which is definitely a good thing:

propeciahelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1436

“…The man was advised to stop taking finasteride, and 12 weeks after doing so, his sperm concentration was 0.9 2 106/mL. It climbed to 5.5 2 106/mL after six months without the drug.”

“… He had been taking finasteride 1 mg/day for three years. Three months after he stopped taking the drug, his sperm concentration improved to 6.6 2 106/mL, which rose to 18.7 2 106/mL after six months.”
