Melman

I had a recent visit with Dr Melman. Turned out he had two more recent patients with fin related problems, one of which had an appointment earlier that day. This is in addition to two others he mentioned previously. He was disappointed that the warnings weren’t sufficient. Anyway, his curiosity was finally tickled. Said he would love to look into it further and write an article on it. Then said he was going to have one of his residents do some research and write a paper for him. Hopefully he follows through. I mentioned looking into these boards for other sufferers and reference. He gave me his email and I’m going to forward him this and the yahoo links.

I think I might mention the articles section specifically. Though I showed an article to him once that he discredited in the first paragraph.

Well, we’ll see.

Can you tell me Melman’s full name? Is it this guy? http://www.aestheticdermatology.com/cad-melman.htm

If that’s the guy then it’s interesting that a dermatologist is willing to consider finasteride is causing us these problems.

This is great news, I hope he does have a chance to browse through the Studies section of this website, and also have a glance at our bloodtests to see what Finasteride can do to a person’s hormonal profile – particularly after discontinuation.

Is he aware that Dr. Eugene Shippen is also aware and is speaking out about the rare but dangerous side effects of 5AR Inhibitors, and has some treatment protocols for such? As a medical colleague, Shippen may be someone Melman might be able to confer with for further details. Same goes for Dr. Irwin Goldstein and Dr John Crisler.

Anyway, this is a positive step in the right direction – I look forward to seeing what Dr. Melman has to say!

For some reason i can’t get in touch with doctor Goldstein. I’m in Boston too, but I think he’s on leave for a while or something. Does anyone know?

Yes Boston- dr. goldstein is relocating his office somewheres in the boston area. There use to be a place on this forum with his e-mail address. I don’t know it offhand.

I gave “boston” his website URL and it had his contact information there. From what I was able to gather he was supposed to find a location for his private practice after leaving Boston University but that was like 2 years ago I think.

Edit: Reposting the URL http://www.irwingoldsteinmd.com/

Edit2: Ack, he seems to have updated his contact information on his website now. He’s accepted a position in San Diego.

Mew this is why I like this site you created. Someday when someone decides to study these side effects, they are going to come to this site for the data. Our personal profiles, blood work, and recovery are all excelent sources.

What I think would still help is a place where we could log our age, dates on and off fin., symptoms measured in severe, moderate, or mild, and treatments tried and with what success. A diary of sorts short and sweet that we could all look at. For example:

Grail's Log

    Started Propecia- July/06@ age 44 1/2

    Stopped Propecia- Sept/06

Symptoms- Severe ED, Severe short term memory loss,
                       Moderate decreased libido, Moderate vision
                       problems(focusing close), Moderate concentration
                       problems.

     Treatments- Medical-none yet
                        Outdoor running- helped a little

Well what do you think. Whatever you say because I do think you do a great job and I do tend to get carried away.

Grail, good idea. And by all means, feel free to post such a log.

However, the place to post it I believe would be under the “Personal Profiles” section of your own name.

Ie, you post your personal profile, then you reply to your own thread and post updates so that people can follow your progress.

I will not be creating yet another section as the more sections there are, the harder it becomes to locate information. Hope you understand.

Thanks.

Mew.

Yes, but Mew I understand what grail is saying. I think it should be a more detailed identical questionaire for everyone visiting. I wonder if there could be any sort of template made in order to pull up the questionaire?? OR MAYBE We could title a post “Personal Profile Questionaire” and then at the top of the page once people open it up, state to them, “Please first cut and paste this whole questionaire into another post titled with your name, and then fill in.”

Then as far as the questionaire, it would give more details, all in the same order for everyone.
And like I am always curious… how much do dudes weigh, their height, body type, metabolism, activity like, occupation, what they eat/diet, other medications they are taking… stuff like that. other than the obvious stuff we all want to know first like age, time taken, and time off.
ANyway, location should be added too. among other things.

Anyway, I completely agree with you grail.

Maybe I’ll help if and when I have more time, if I can just get a little undepressed for a while to finish up all my school work, appease my girlfriend who’s lucky for me still around, and take care of myself so I don’t go jump off a cliff somewhere in the Rockies.

Anyway, I will update you guys soon.

Grail/boston,

I have posted Profile guidelines/questions in the Personal Profiles section. That should hopefully help provide more “standardized” profiles.

Hi Mew

Must be a tough day for you. First you have me beating a dead horse and then you have to deal with a personal vendetta. I didn’t mean to pressure you But as a scientist (who knows nothing about this subject) I see the value in collecting data. I hope everyone fills out the personal profile questionaire so we can state some facts ( eg. % of people on this forum who suffer from symptom A). As soon as this computer illiterate learns how to cut and paste I’ll be filling mine out. Are you sure you wouldn’t want to keep this a seperate thread though? Oops there I go again.

I mentioned Shippen, Goldstein and Crisler specifically. Also the articles section. I’m looking forward to see what has to say.

I like the idea of a standard profile. It’s easier to access everyone’s situation on the whole. The long narrative versions are a bit difficult on the fly. Also, it would be nice to have a brief summarized version in everyone’s individual “profile”. I remember the hairlosstalk site had “view my regimen” in each post where you can roll-over the persons profile within the thread very easily. It could list dates, symptoms and regimen.

Again, can someone please state Melman’s full name? What is his specialty?

Sorry Josh. It’s Arnold Melman and he’s a urologist in NYC.
