  1. What (if any) treatments have you undertaken to recover from your side effects since discontinuation of the drug? staying hydrated, daily vitamin, exercise.

  2. If you have pre or post-Finasteride bloodtests, what hormonal changes have you encountered since discontinuing the drug (pls post your test results in the “Blood Tests” section and link to them in your post)? no tests yet, doc doesn’t think necessary and part of rebound so far.

  3. Anything not listed in the above questions you’d like to share about your experience with Finasteride? Experienced, during the last month or so while I was on Propecia, serious sleep problems. This included poor sleep without an REM cycle, and extreme difficulty in “waking up” in the mornings. Also, body was not responding to night impulses and bed wetting if I drank too much liquid before sleep.

  4. Tell us your story, in your own words, about your Finasteride usage and side effects experienced while on/off the drug.

My odyssey with finasteride began in January 2010, when I decided to take the drug (poison) as a means of preventing a further hair-loss. I intended only to stay on the drug until I got married to my girlfriend, because I vainly wanted to have hair in my wedding photos.

Initially after taking the Propecia, I experienced some side-effects almost immediately. The sensitivity in my nipples, light anxiety and very minor testicular pain, however, subsided quickly. I was also recovering from a bout with the flu at the time and I mistakenly attributed these symptoms to the general over-sensitivity I normally experienced when sick.

During the first month or so, I began to have some anxiety, but as a Ph.D. student and under a lot of pressure, I again mistakenly attributed this to general stress, dehydration, and, because I have a fear of flying, trepidation at having to make a flight to NYC in April on small planes. Off and on, I experienced a couple episodes of bed wetting, but I again attributed this to over indulging during a night out with friends.

Around the middle of May 2010, I began to have a terrible problem waking up in the morning. During the first hour or so of being awake, I felt like I was in a fog and extremely lethargic, although this eventually went away. This is about when I began to notice that I really wasn’t sleeping well, as even after 8-10 hours of sleep, I still felt fatigued. I was also becoming emotionally flat and found that my concentration was shot. I could not focus on anything, particularly writing, and even working up the motivation to write a review or conduct research was non-existent.

In June, the anxiety became worse and worse, like I wanted to crawl out of my skin. I finally began to research the possible causes of what might be causing this and, when I could find nothing on the web, decided to empirically deduce what had changed before January and June. The only thing I could think of was the Propecia, and after doing some research and coming across this site, put the two and two together.

On June 22, 2010, I quit Propecia cold turkey. Within three days, the “brain fog” lifted and I felt that the quality of my sleep was improving. Within a week, the fatigue was gone and I began an exercise regimen. However, I also began experiencing terrible anxiety and experienced two severe panic attacks, one of which I went to hospital for. After talking with the doctor there, he told me that finasteride was likely causing all of these symptoms and that the severity was because I had quit cold turkey. The remainder of that weekend was filled with varying degrees of anxiety, but I was able to keep a hold on it without an attack. Around this time, the odd sensations I was feeling on my scalp began to abate as well.

The next two weeks I began to feel better and better, with the scalp sensitivity going away almost completely and the anxiety gone for days at a time. My sexual function returned to normal as well and I was able to achieve full, hard erections.

Currently, this progress seems to have regressed somewhat. Three days ago, the anxiety has returned with a minor panic attack occurring on July 22 and subsequent anxiety that has persisted until this morning (July 24), which has only abated since about an hour before my writing of this post.

I went to the doctor yesterday to ask him some questions about these side-effects etc., and was pleasantly surprised to find a general practitioner who not only had a low opinion of finasteride in general, but aware of these side effects. I didn’t want to go on anything for the anxiety, which he agreed, as he didn’t want to “muddle” anything in trying to find a diagnosis. Pretty much, he told me that, a month out, what I’m going through is not that uncommon, but that anything beyond two months needs to be looked into further.

I haven’t had any hormonal blood work done, but between research on this site and the tests that were done during my hospital visit, it appears I’m having trouble staying hydrated. My metabolism also seems to be slowing down as I haven’t been having full BMs.

After talking with the doctor yesterday, I am also wondering how much of this anxiety and the scalp/head symptoms might be related to environmental conditions, as life is not treating myself nor those around me particularly well at the moment. I feel like this is a possible reason, but am doubtful because they began well before much of this stress in my life appeared.

My question and request for advice is this: given my experience, how should I proceed next? While at the hospital at the beginning of July, I had cardio blood work done as well as a chest x-ray, both of which came back negative for anything unusual. Not sure what else goes into/comes up with cardio blood work and I can get those results if needed. Also, from users here, based on your opinion, is what I’m experiencing “normal” (I hate to use that term, because none of this is normal) and I can reasonably expect recovery, or should I be concerned that I’m having the onset of a crash and should take action now? Should I request the blood work suggested on this site? I’m most concerned because I can’t seem to shake the anxiety and these odd sensations in my scalp.

Thank you all.

Best,

michiganguy28

If you really want to understand why you were having panic attacks and anxiety, review the fact that Finasteride is a neurosteroid inhibitor: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=38

Also, viewtopic.php?f=24&t=668
viewtopic.php?f=24&t=1387

Fin inhibits Allopregnanolone (anti-depressant) and THDOC (anti-anxiety) neurosteroids which can no longer act on GABA-A receptors in the brain.

This should clear up in time, however it may take many months.

That’s interesting the doc said it was cos you quit cold.
I had a panic attack after penultimate run of fin, should have gone to ER, might have joined the dots instead of going back on again.

quiting cold and whenning off makes no difference

Interesting how you mention the bed wetting. This sounds trivial, but I had two episodes with that last summer when I first started taking the drug (poison). I didn’t connect the dots either. I hadn’t wet the bed since I was a kid. I was very mystified by this. I wonder how the hell the poison can do that??? Unbelievable. The craziest thing about this drug is just that…THE CRAZINESS. The stuff that it does to you is just so unfathomable.

It’s simple: the drug atrophies the prostate, allowing you to pass urine more easily. Hence why it is often prescribed as Proscar for older men suffering from BPH.

I had similar symptoms, not bed wetting but post fin I had to get up two or sometimes three times a night to urinate small amounts (mid 40s, no prior issues here). I believe Mew is generally correct in the quote above, that those with post fin are having a prostrate that has shrunk to far, causing some form of prostatic hypoplasia (note, the converse of hyperplasia). I can report that raising my testosterone from hypogonadal levels yo the upper one third of the common range relieves those symptoms - in fact, on dosage days (see My Recovery Via Clomid) my stream is considerably stronger.

You remind me of me - I spent 2 years assuming it was somehow my heart, did the whole drill with dye injected stress tests etc… Take the advice on this site, get at a minimum your total serum testosterone tested, and also 3a androstanediol glucuronide - let us know what you find out - my own primary care doc had no idea that 300 ng/dl is too low for a man my age.

The anxiety I think (I am not a doctor) is likely due to your cortisol levels being out of whack - typically sky high in the AM and crashed too low in the afternoon-evening (when does the anxiety bother you the most?). Best solution for that I have found for that aspect is to take ~ 300 mg+ of phosphatidylserine conjugated with DHA before 8 AM each morning. You might get an 8 am cortisol serum reading to be more certain.

Be careful of what vitamins you take, some act in a manner similar to finasteride and in my opinion should be avoided (example - zinc).

Good luck - there is a fantastic knowledge base here and progress in understanding post fin is making progress . . . . .

BTW, as you are in Michigan, run (do not walk) and see Dr. John Crisler.

Just wanted to provide an update and maybe get some advice for my next move, if I need one.

Here is the story thus far:

After my visit to the doctor on July 24, I went back on July 26 because I was still dealing with significant anxiety issues, for which I was given buspirone (Buspar). I took this for about three days, and while it helped somewhat with the anxiety, I did not like the way it made me feel at all (emotionally dead, bouts of severe depression rather than anxiety) so I quit taking it. I visited my family doctor in Michigan (I’m currently at school in Tennessee), who would not believe that any of this could possibly be related to finasteride, which he assured me was safe and harmless (his brother was the one who prescribed the Propecia for me without providing any advice on the possible side effects). However, after consulting with him I decided to begin taking St. John’s Wort (3x daily).

Since then (July 29), I have been feeling much better emotionally, although during the evening of July 29 I did have an anxiety episode.

Upon his advice (which I’m less than thrilled with at the moment), I’ve since had blood work done in Tennessee. I’m going to pick up the results this afternoon, which I will post later this evening, but from what I was told over the phone was that liver, kidney, and thyroid function was fine. Testosterone was “a little low” (was told over the phone 1.48, with 1.5 being “normal”/wasn’t given an indication of what scale was being used). I am, however, curious about the testosterone test as it was taken at 4:30pm and while I was suffering from waning anxiety issues. Will get it retested in a week or so to see if the levels are static or increasing.

As of today (Aug 9), the majority of the side effects seem to have abated. Only thing that’s left is some scalp sensitivity which is going away slowly and might be related to lingering anxiety. Currently I’m not feeling anxious, but still mildly paranoid about symptoms/health in general, though it’s not “run away” like it was 10+ days ago. Sexual function is returning to pre-fin levels. I get “excited” fairly easily and have been able to achieve fairly consistent erections, though they are variable in terms of “firmness.” My moods are about 80% back to normal: I haven’t been short as much and don’t get angry as often or quickly when frustrated anymore. Have not had a bed-wetting incident in over a month, based on urine stream, I think my prostate is back to normal size/function (maybe).

I’m not sure what effect the St. John’s Wort is having, as I did not take anything other than a general multi-vitamin the first recovery “cycle.” I suspect that the relapse of symptoms was alcohol related (had a few too many on July 23, which brought everything back full on). Have since been abstaining from alcohol indefinitely, begun exercising more, and trying to eat more lean proteins. Taking a “men’s health” multi-vitamin for the added vitamin D, as well as Omega-3 fish oil, Calcium, B12, and C.

I did also broach the question of whether some of these symptoms, the anxiety in particular, could be exacerbated by mold. Recently did a home test and found that we (my significant other and I) have a fairly substantial mold problem (white is what was airborne) and suspected black mold growing in the walls of the bathrooms (moving out in 10 days). I’ve since been put on Allegra and Nasonex to help with a suspected allergy. Appointment with an allergist next week will confirm anything.

Sorry about the length and any discursive ideas. Just trying to get to the bottom of this without wasting time on anything unnecessary and keep as thorough a record out there as possible for anyone else. I’ll be back in Michigan in September, so if there has been no improvement from now to then, I’m going to consider heading to Dr. Crisler. The doctor’s I’ve encountered here in Tennessee have been pretty good so far and at least acknowledge that finasteride does some pretty terrible things to the body and have a low opinion of it, though I’m thinking I may need to turn to a specialist if nothing gets better.

Thanks again everyone, I’ll try and post the blood test results later this evening.

michiganguy28,

From what you have posted already your doctor is losing credibility in my eyes. What does that mean, that your liver, kidney and thryoid function look fine. Get actual test results for all of them. Ask for the entire report done on all your hormones, you are entitiled to a copy of them.

You need to see ranges associated with the hormones, to determine what is high or low. It’s really comical that your doctor is telling you 1.5 is normal. Where does 1.5 fall in the range? If the range is 1.3-6.3 then 1.5 would be far from normal. If you are young guy, you should be in the top 70% of the range. Don’t just take his word for it. Get the actual results and understand them.

I’m telling you all of this, because I have personally dealt with 5 lousy endocrinoligsts in my quest to get better. I was told by one doctor that my thyroid was fine, only to go seek another opinion and find out I have hypothyroidism.

fyi, You will need more than a couple of weeks notice for an apt with Chrisler. He usually books about 3 months out.

Sorry about the delay. Just wanted to provide an update and get some feedback.

I finally got a copy of my testosterone test results (only tested testosterone, nothing else that I requested) and didn’t have my other blood work (kidney, liver, thyroid) on file. I’ll be getting that supposedly by Friday when the lab they had it done at gets back to them.

This was collected on August 2, a little over a month after quitting Propecia.

Testosterone, Free and Total, LC/MS/MS

Testosterone, Total: In Range 382, Ref. Range 250-1100 ng/dL

Testosterone, Free (Percent): Out of Range, 1.48 L, Ref. Range 1.50-2.20%

Free Testosterone: In Range 56.5, Ref. Range 35.0-155.0 pg/mL

Naturally, these don’t look good. I’m 28 and it appears that I have the testosterone levels of a 60 year old man. Doctors are still not convinced that finasteride is the cause of this. What I’m not sure of is what these levels should reasonably be like at peak and low. I’m willing to concede that this low number is partly related to the time of day the sample was collected (3-4pm), but even at a low point, it should be much higher. I’m assuming somewhere in the 70+ percentile?

As far as my general feeling and overall health, I’ve been on again, off again with symptoms. Since I started school, a bit of the anxiety has returned, though the stress of everything is certainly a contributing factor. Nothing that I haven’t been able to handle on my own. Have seen a very mild return of the sexual side-effects as well. Erections are not consistent, though everything still “feels” right.

I have an appointment with an allergist as well, so I’ll know if anything contributing to the side-effects is environmental (I doubt it, but I would rather cover my bases).

My plan of action (and if anyone has better suggestions, please let me know) is to go get retested with a full hormonal workup this time and see if there has been some improvement. If this facility won’t approve it or take me seriously, I’m going to head to an endocrinologist. These numbers are appallingly low and I’m quite irritated that I was told everything was “normal.”

In the interim, does anyone have any suggestions for naturally boosting my system to help it get back on track? Also, should I see what my vitamin/mineral levels, etc. are along with a full hormonal workup?

And to bostonusa2009, thank you for the advice about scheduling with Dr. Crisler. I’ll try to work something out for December or January then.

Best,

michiganguy28

Same pattern as almost everyone else that finds they end up with low T post-Fin… perhaps you should print off Dr. Jacobs’ blog posts about noticing hypogonadal T levels in ex-Finasteride users and provide that to docs to prove your case.

blog.alanjacobsmd.com/alan-jacob … n-men.html

Some optimal ranges are here:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1954

Under the blood and hormone section, post Post you TFT tests here there are links to a full spectrum of thyroid tests that aren’t usually done in doctors office. Since you are having digestion problems along with other symptoms of hypothyroid it’s a good idea to run the thyroid tests including:

Free t3 and t4
Rt3
Aldosterone
Cortisol 24hr saliva test

The recommended tests come from a website called stopthethyroidmadness.com. There are many recent posts on thyroid function and testing if you search the forum and some members who have had success treating this.

Thanks for the info everyone. I’m trying to find an endo locally in East Tennessee, is anyone from this area and has a recommendation?

Regardless of who I see, I’ll be bringing Dr. Jacob’s blog posts. Is there any other “ammo” I should have in my arsenal for a visit?

Like I posted earlier, all I was given was an “everything is fine” from a nurse over the phone. I’m not sure how to interpret these results or if they even mean anything relative to what I’m experiencing.

I’m hoping to get into the endo by the end of this week or early next and get the full work up in the FAQ.

As a general update to my overall “feeling,” on most days (maybe 5 out of 7) I generally have little or no issues with my mood or anxiety. I still get odd sensations in my head from time to time and headaches, though these are becoming fewer.
Sexually, my erections are coming back and the last 3 have been quite solid. My penis has normal sensation and I’m definitely feeling more aroused than I was a few weeks ago. I have been, however, having sensations in my groin. It’s not pain in the classical sense and feels more in the groin muscle than the testicles, but they have been more sensitive as of the last couple days.

I’ve been avoiding sugar, caffeine, and alcohol like the plague and been taking a general vitamin high in vitamin D (3,000% daily value), in addition to B12, B6, C, Fish Oil, and St. Johns Wort. This regimen seems to be helping. Without overdoing anything, I’ve read that adding vitamin A can help naturally increase testosterone as well. I have, however, heard a lot of conflicting things. I don’t want to go overboard and try and push it too fast, but stimulating things can’t hurt. Is this regimen fine or should I add/subtract some things?

My major concern at this point is my testosterone being too low that I develop hypogonadism or that my thyroid is out of whack . A more comprehensive work-up will hopefully tell me more as well as reveal any potential improvement over the last month or so.

Thanks again. Everyone on this board has been so generous with their time and patience, which is a Godsend to me. I’m in my last year of Ph.D coursework and without everyone here pointing me in the right directions and saving me many hours of research, I’m not sure if I could get through it all.

Best,

michiganguy28

Update:

Got updated testosterone results (9/2/10), and things actually got worse

Testosterone, Total: 293 (250-1100 ng/dL)
Testosterone, Free Percent: 1.68 (1.50-2.2%)
Free Testosterone: 49.2 (35.0-155.0 pg/mL)

as compared to my results from early August

Testosterone, Total: 382
Testosterone, Free Percent: 1.48
Free Testosterone: 56.5

What I’m confused about is why the Free Percent went up, but the Total and Free went down. Has anyone else experienced this?

I have an appointment with an endo for the end of this month, so hopefully I can get some better answers from the doctors.

What’s irritating is that I’m feeling better, but it appears that I’m actually getting worse.

Thanks in advance,

Best,

michiganguy28

a 100-200 point swing in testosterone levels are normal
