L-Lysine, a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor?

Hello everyone,

I haven’t posted on these boards in a long time. Anyway, for the longest time I have been taking Lysine to help reduce frequency of cold sore outbreaks, and I was just searching the internet and found that many sites regard L-Lysine as a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. Many of these website claim that when taken in combination with Propecia, lysine helps increase the “effectiveness” of the drug. Furthermore, on the LifeExtension website, it states that L-lysine has recently been patented to be usued as a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor for treating hairloss. This has come as some surprise to me, yet it makes sense. I have noticed that whenever I have taken large doses in the past, my libido and energy has fallen. However, maybe I’m just hallucinating.

Here’s the link to the lifeextension webpage:

Now for my questions:

Does anyone have any more information on this? Can anyone point me in the direction of the actually study that so many of these websites are now referring or is this all just internet hearsay?

Hi
Not sure about L-Lysine, but I have heard froma homeopath that green tea extract and Saw Palmetto could inhibitors and show promise for combating hairloss.

why are you talking about hairloss remedies? No body has any interest in it now any more.

If Lysine is a 5AR inhibitor then it is probably extremely weak, like zinc. You are going to be worse off by avoiding lysine and zinc then you are taking them as they have very important functions.

How is a company going to patent L-Lysine? It is a natural amino-acid.
