  3. Anything not listed in the above questions you’d like to share about your experience with Finasteride?

  4. Tell us your story, in your own words, about your Finasteride usage and side effects experienced while on/off the drug.

I had a hair transplant in LA,California. The doctor gave me a script for Propecia for 1 year. On the drug I had less sensitivity and difficulty in reaching climax. My sleep became progressively worse. I was sleeping about 9 hours a night but I felt as I only slept 4 hours or less. My frustration lies primarily in that the company that produces propecia does not list insomnia(or reduced quality of sleep) within its side effects. If I would have known why I was having horrific trouble obtaining quality of sleep I would have got off the drug the day I found out. Instead, I stayed on it and it hurt my social, family, and marriage. I had to skip out on a lot.

Post Propecia
after 4 years or so, my sleep is getting there, its still not what it was before the drug, but I am extremely grateful to see an improvement

Libido is still greatly reduced. I used to have an appetite for sex about 4-5 days a week. Currently I am interested in sex about once every other month

My thinking is slower, and I feel as my brain is foggy. Exercise and diet have helped this a moderate amount

My bone density is off the charts low. I can look up and post my numbers if anyone is interested, but my numbers I think are -3.5…Ill have to look… But this worries me, as I enjoy running races almost more than anything. If anyone has experience with this (hopefully positive improvement) please let me know

Currently I am not taking any supplements except for high doses of fish oil. The fish oil seems to help, quite a bit for mood. I am also following a strict pre-sleep routine. Journal, bath or shower, no internet or tv an hour before bed. Although I believe time off the drug helped me combat the insomnia more, every little bit helps. My no wheat, no sugar and no processed food diet also seems to have helped my mental clarity and mood a good deal. I might be biased, but running has also been a must. Im outside, getting vit d, my mental clarity has improved+ better sleep and mood. I just hope I can keep it up over the winter. Treadmills are so boring. I also do not drink alcohol whatsoever. I used to drink to excess, but quit almost 7 years ago.

I realize my side effects pale in comparison to many of you, but nonetheless they have made my life difficult for many years. I wonder if my sides are not as great because I am slightly older?

Thanks everyone for maintaining this site. If I never found this site I think I would have gone nuts not knowing where these side effects were coming from

1 last thing, Is there any interest in starting a new section “symptom recovery”. I am not convinced “recover” from every single side effect. How about a section where we can post on specifically on how we recovered from individual sides. say, “sleep”, “frequent urination”,“clicking joints”

I’ve been looking for a calcium supplement. I tried Citrucel calcium citrate with magnesium and a few other ingredients. I was surprised that I got brain fog from it. I figured it was from some other ingredient in it so I tried Citrucel with only calcium citrate and vit d3. Again I got brain fog. Finally I tried “coral calcium” from Wal-Mart. I guess it’s from ocean coral. Luckily, no brain fog. I can’t believe calcium citrate and D3 gave me brain fog??

I had also previously tried St John’s Wort, and I had the worst brain fog ever.

kngreen60 I am in the same boat. I have low bone density, mild osteoporosis. I was to the point where unable to walk or sit on hard chairs. I have been taking Vit D3 for over a year and my bones are better now but no recovery.

Sounds like your heading in the right direction. Thats shitty its been hard to walk even. I cant believe how many different side effects this medication causes

I had another bone density test last month. Good news is my density improved! I’ll have to look at the report but I think the scale was -3 to +3. When I was on propecia I was off the scale on the form they had. I think I was -3.2. Last year I was -2.8. This year I was -1.11. They said people grow bone until age 35 (not sure what that means exactly). Ive been taking coral calcium infrequently and been running and getting a lot of sun this last summer.

Update:

A few small improvements.

Sleep continues to get better. I kinda doubt sleep will ever be back to what it was, but the improvements are very welcomed. I still wake up 3-4 times a night, but usually fall back asleep quickly. I am sleeping “good enough” maybe 4-5 days a week, without any pills (except fishoil and glucoamine).

Clicking in knees and feet, gone 95% of the time.

Carpel tunnel (symptoms) seemed to clear up 90%

Bone density is getting better by the year also. I was off the charts bad -3.2, but now Im -1.6.

The rest is still about the same. Cold body temps, very low libido, joint pain. Brain fog is still there. Extreme brain fog seems to come after quickly after eating simple carbs (chips, Cheetos, cakes, candy). I try to avoid these @ school, instead I eat peanuts or meat snacks.

I was really hoping my body temps would resolve. I have no evidence but I would guess this could be a partial indication of recovery but my temps havent seemed to change in the last few years

Alcohol, caffeine, stress, sugars, too much sexual activity, and exhaustion could all exacerbate brain fog. Do you notice any other triggers than sugar? Some members here have reported that fasting or a raw food diet has helped with brain fog.

I dont drink. Ive tried to follow a paleo diet and it definitively helps but I have trouble sticking with it.

I should try to give up caffeine

Thanks for the input!
