hows your hair?

i was just wondering what kind of hair everyone has since stopping propecia? i have a theory that the reason why most of us are having such bad side effects is that we probably never had a problem with blading in the first place.

the basic theory behind male pattern baldness (MPB)is that men who suffer from it, have naturally higher levels of DHT in their bodies and the idea behind propecia is to lower DHT to that of a man who doesn’t suffer from baldness. i think that most of us had normal DHT levels to begin with, and just noticed some slight hair loss that was probably not MPB.

so if you could. please state your age, reason why you took propecia, and how your overall hair is today.

age : 28

reason for propecia: my hair used to fall out a lot, and i noticed some slight receding of my hair line

hair: i have a full head of hair. slightly receded hair line. no real change since i stopped taking propecia.

notes: i think my hair originally started to fall out, because it was dry and damaged from using hair dye for too many years. slightly receding hair line might be early MPB… but propecia isn’t even known to help impove your hairline, they mostly claim to grow hair in the back of the head (aka blad spot).

I dont think this is right, i think men who suffer from balding have something that makes them react to the DHT, it doesnt mean they have more

When I was on Propecia my hair grew amazingly well, very thick - I was really plased with the results uptop, I didnt, however, realise what damage Propecia was doing elsewhere

Since quitting Propecia my hair hasn’t been falling out like it used to before Propecia which leads me to believe my hormones and more specifically my DHT wasn’t what it was before Propecia

And yes I am going bald but I am not concerned with my hair anymore.

Agreed, men who get bald, does not have higher DHT levels.

I have not lost any hair since quitting either, so Im sure my DHT is still beeing kept at a too low a level for me.

well … i think the MARKETING behind propecia and all hair loss treatment is that the cause of baldness is DHT, and the cure is to block it.

My hair loss has increased since I stopped taking propecia. The quality of my hair has also deteriorated. But the shedding has been at a slow pace, mainly at the front (receding hair line). When I first started losing my hair, and before I took propecia, my hair loss was occuring at a faster pace.

Skippyb- To answer your original question - yes just like you I had a lot of hair in most spots. However I was losing hair in the temple regions and the crown. I was getting that V shape in the front. And when I got out of the shower you could see the horseshoe shape. 6 months after quitting propecia I still have more hair than when I started.

Now I realize I should Of just had a hair transplant but I thought it was too expensive and radical. Now I know Propecia has cost me a lot more. It is more radical. I thought I was taking a relatively safe drug and if I did have side effects they would cease with discontinuing the drug.

Hair transplants work much better with propecia. In fact without it you could look much worse in the long run especially if you started losing your hair beofre age 30

Hair results were fantastic but it stopped working after 3 years.

Stopped my hairloss while on the drug, when I came off I shed a little bit but did not experience much loss until 10 months off.

The rate of loss since Finasteride has been much slower than before I took it. I also used to suffer from an oily/dandruffy (seborrheic dermatitis) scalp with itch… that dissappeared while on Fin and for the past 16 months hasn’t been a problem.

I’ve been off 18 months now and over the past 2 months my rate of loss has been increasing. Also noticing small dandruff flakes coming back (nowhere near what they were before Fin – crusts on my scalp that would pull out hairs if I removed them)… and a corresponding, albeit very small, rise in libido/erectile ability.

I will be getting new bloodtests in the coming week since its been 10 months since my last ones. I’m betting my T levels (and hence DHT) are increasing.

Before starting Propecia I had some thinning in a small area at the back of my head (looked like a slightly expanded cowlick). After 3 weeks on Propecia my hair started shedding from all over my head and I also started losing body hair. I also have seborrheic dermatitis now but I feel this only started after taking the Propecia. I continued taking the Propecia for 3 more weeks but stopped due to side effects after being on it for a total of 6 weeks.

I have now been off the drug for 11 months and my scalp and body hair shedding has not stopped and even my eyebrows have thinned. My dermatologist recently performed a scalp biopsy and claims it looks like I have alopecia areata which is an autoimmune disease that isn’t well understood. There have been a few members on the yahoo group that had this severe hair shedding also after taking finasteride so I know this is something the finasteride did to us and not really alopecia areata.

So in short, finasteride has screwed up my hair big time. I was probably headed towards being a NW5 or NW6 as is prevalent in my family. Now I don’t know where I’ll end up, even my sideburns have thinned.

Anyone else suffer from diffuse thinning?

My hairline has changed very little and my vertex is pretty much spotless, however hair on the rest of my head is very thin.

Since I remove most of my body hair for bodybuilding I did notice it grows back much slower and thinner on Propecia, for me that is a good thing.

Many people think a shedding period after starting Propecia or Rogaine means the drug is going to work well for you and the weakened hairs are the ones that are falling out and will be replaced by stronger hair within 6 months.

I was on Finpecia for about 4 months. Started when i noticed i could see my scalp on a sunny day with dry hair. I have short hair but can see scalp as its quite thin. Ive always had thin hair but think its js gettin thinner with age.

While i was on fipecia, my shedding slowed down.but i also thought my hair felt thinner too and not as healthy. Have been off it for 1.5months and i shed about 50 hairs a day, when i was on finpecia i shed around 10 hairs a day.
