ok, i have been to dermatologist twice and he said what is causing my hot flashes is the proscar. I am 27 years old and everywhere i go where its hot, i get hot flashes. I have taken proscar for 6 years probably and really had no side effects. My sex drive is fine. Maybe sometimes i cant go as long as i would like, but never had problems with erection. I didnt know if proscar would cause me to get hot flashes quite regularly now. I also take bodybuilding supplements so i am thinking my system might be all out of whack. Please give me some good advice as to what i need to do. Proscar has worked great for my hair loss. Any other options as i am thinking about getting off this and going with something else. I just started hot flashes alot 6 months ago. I use to take a full pill of proscar when i was younger and now take it into 1/3/. Please help.
Yes, I got horrible hot flashes on. Probably the extra E.
Hot flashes are a symptom of androgen deprivation therapy, which is what you are doing by taking Finasteride (depriving your body of up to 70% of DHT, a potent male androgen).
See: pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articl … d=16985883
As well, doesn’t matter how much or how little you take of Finasteride, drug has a near flat dose response so it will inhibit almost same amount of DHT wether its 0.25mg or 5mg.
See: physics.upenn.edu/facultyinf … peciafda2/
Wether you want to continue with the medication is up to you, if the only side effect you have is hot flashes that is nowhere near as bad as ED, loss of libido etc. It’s your call but everyone here would suggest you get off.
thanks for the response. I will stop immediately. What medicines can i take to get my hormones on balance? Also, is there any alternatives to stopping hair loss since i dont want to mess with hormones. Topical products. Minoxidil???Also, i sweat under the armpits when i get hot flashes, this antoher sign of proscar??Thanks again
What things do I need to take? Is my testerone leve high or low? Is my estrogen level low or high. What do i need to take. Thanks
Just quit and you will most likely be fine, these nightmare stories are an extreme minority. Although my situation got ten times worse when I quit, so you are in a pickle. Maybe the flashes will go away on their own?
If you get physical sides, get bloodwork. My opinion only…
Other treatments could be minoxidil with nizoral and/or revivogen
so you are sayiing mine will get worse once i am off of it. I think i would need to take something. why is yours worse. You not do anythign about it.
There’s nothing you need to take, just quit and most likely everything will be fine! If you are concerned about your hormone levels get them tested before you quit as outlined in Hormones & Bloodtests section, then if things dont go back to normal after you quit within a few weeks/months, get them retested.
what about complexion, etc…I would get burnt really easy when outside because i would get hot flashes. This isnt because of my genes. I was never like this until this past few years. I have darker skin and i am not pale by any means, just my arms get red and face. I think its due to the proscar. Any suggestions about that/
If i were you, I would not do anything if that’s your only problem and it’s keeping hair on your head
Not sure about getting sunburnt, but reddening of the skin has been associated with hot flushes/flashes:
From
pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articl … d=16985883
“The typical manifestation of hot flushes is a sudden perceived increase in temperature, specifically a feeling of warmth in the face, neck, upper chest, and back, which might be associated with reddening of the skin and profuse sweating.”
If you’ve quit the drug your problems should go away with time. If you haven’t quit and this is such a big deal for you, then quit. I don’t know what else to tell you.
I was on proscar for 7 years or so. I recently quit cold turkey 4 months ago. I experienced some acne, more freckles on body and face, etc…I quit because my face would get hot in uncomftorable situations and i would flush easily as well as my armpits would sweat so bad. If i go to a doctor office, i sweat like crazy under my arms and get hot flashes everytime. that is just an example. If i meet someone i havent seen in a while in a store or something, my body does this for some reason. i am not a nervous or shy person either. Cant help this? BUt is this all related to proscar use and if so, why do i still have these effects 4 months later. I quit because i thought it was related to this and very well couldnt. But i went to an endo doc and my free testosterone levels were 4 times higher than waht it should be. Could that be the issue and could i blame proscar for this???Please let me know peoples opions on this ASAP.
Thanks
Likely due to reflex androgenecity if your Free T levels are 4x above the range.
i had these for a month and could not be around any hot or warm environments accompanied by head pain and unusual panic (fight or flight responses).
that symptom has thankfully subsided. my estrogen was recently checked and it was at the very maximum range of normality for males. i would assume that my e2 was much higher when i had these intense hot flashes.
give it time and it should get better. eat foods that are known to reduce estrogen levels like flax seeds. drink green teas. stay away from soy based foods!
may God help us all.
