I started Propecia for one week and then I had a blood test checking my hormone levels. Unfortunately, my doctor didn’t give me a good baseline blood test. The baseline test only looked at my total testosterone - which was within range: 23 nmol / L the range is (8.4 to 28.8).
One week after starting propecia (approximately 7 days) I went to a naturopath and insisted on getting a full hormone check done. Not because I experienced any symptoms but just because I wanted an actual good baseline test done of all my hormones and it seemed like a regular doctor wouldn’t do it (even if I insisted on paying they seem to look at me like I’m crazy for wanting to get everything checked).
So here are the numbers (in Canadian units) for that hormone profile:
Estradiol 204 — the range is < 150 (pmol/L)
Progesterone 2 — the range is <4 (nmol/L)
DHEA-S 9.4 — the range is <15.0 (umol/L)
SHBG 86.2 — the range is 10.0 – 70.0 (nmol/L)
Testosterone 40.8 – the range is 8.4 to 28.8 (nmol/L)
Free Testosterone 679 — the range is 170 to 630 (pmol/L)
Bioavailable T 15.9 — the range is 4.7 to 15.0 (nmol/L)
I just wanted to know if it’s possible that taking Propecia for just one week could drastically change the numbers this much… Could it be a pre-existing condition, this is the first time I’ve had all my hormones checked? I know the liver plays a role in terms of hormones and I’ve had slightly elevated AST and ALT numbers in the past.
Needless to say I’ve stopped the Propecia completely for the past couple of weeks, and I’m thinking about going to a regular doctor asking for another full hormone profile. Should I be worried about these numbers?
