High level of DHT

is there anyone with a high level of DHT?

Yes, I recently got tested and my results came back with DHT near the high end of the range, which is probably a good thing in of itself…

However – and I need to research this further – it may be possible that a high DHT level could also potentially surpress T levels (HTPA senses too much DHT in blood, reduces T to compensate).

Short of reducing DHT via Saw Palmetto, Nettles or Pygmeum (and not sure I want to try that since we all know the problems of blocking/reducing DHT via Finasteride!!), not sure what can be done about this.

Will have to look into it further.

It seems lowering DHT when it is a little too high causes your libido to go up.

I didn’t think too high a DHT could cause less libido.

Of course, it’s out of question for anyone of us to take another 5AR inhibitor, but trying to lower DHT in a safe way (maybe by progesterone cream, I don’t know) if we have it too high, may be worth consideration.

Mew, are you losing hair now? Shedding in cycles, etc?

It’s been over 5 year since I quit Fin.

First 6-8 months off, I didn’t lose much hair. Months 8-12 hairloss picked up.

In the past few years, hairloss has been steady per the normal balding process, albeit at a slightly slower rate than I recall it being when I first noticed (before Finasteride).

So yes, I am still losing my hair.

Mew, possibly your body is overcompensating for a lack of 5AR2 activity by ramping up 5AR1 activity thus the high DHT. In any case saw palmetto is a 5AR2 inhibitor so I would be careful with that. Nettle root is also a 5AR2 inhibitor, although it does offer SHBG control.

Realize you already know much of this but in case a casual reader goes to this thread . . . .

For the record, the DHT tests I’ve had so far come out mid range, despite having one of the lowest adiol-G levels on this board. Absent clomiphene I revert back to moderate secondary hypogonadism.

Yes, my initial comments were made back in 2007. I am aware of the 5AR inhibiting properties of these herbs. I never did take them, however.

Mew, have you got any updated blood work done on your Thyroid?

Unfortunately, no bloodwork since 2007. Got tired of battling my doctor.
