Finasteride can cause permanent births defects in a unborn baby....?

“Finasteride is in the FDA pregnancy category X. This means that it is known to cause birth defects in an unborn baby. Women who are or who may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets, because the medication could be absorbed through the skin. Finasteride is known to cause birth defects in a developing male baby.”

I havent seen much discussion about this warning. This a pretty serious side effect to happen to a woman who just comes in contact with a broken pill. How could a pill that is capable of doing this to a woman, be perscribed to a man to take every day for an extended period of time?!

Maybe there is some connection between how a pregnant woman’s baby is effect by finasteride and how members on this site have been permanently effected. Any thoughts?

This is a very hard discussion. Very hard to prove anything. But i would be cautious.
Talking about famous users: Soccer player Romario, 43, had 6 children (born normal, perfectly healthy). His youngest daughter, 7th child (now 4 years old), was born with Down syndrome. He has been a propecia user for some years. The girl is from his most recent wedding, with a 29 year old woman.
Can we say that the child being born with down syndrome is related to propecia? No, absoltutely not, we cannot say that… On the other hand, can we GARANTEE Propecia has no influence whatsoever on that matter? No, absolutely not…
So, very hard to tell.

Now, about the birth defects in male babies, that is because of the inhibition of DHT, which is responsible in forming the sexual organs. It is the same reason we get the sides… by blocking the androgenic hormone. In a baby stops the development of sexual caractheristics, in an adult, we all know the consequences.

Correct. The theoretical risk to a pregnant woman is to the fetus during gestation, while male organs are still being formed and which require 5AR2 and DHT to do so. Same goes for virilization during puberty, without 5AR2/DHT the male penis does not develop to its adult size.
