  4. Tell us your story, in your own words, about your Finasteride usage and side effects experienced while on/off the drug.

I took Finasteride for 2 weeks and suffered a myriad of side effects (lower stomach pain, lower back pain, constipation, gaseous, bloating, groin pain, ball pain). After suffering for a few days at 1mg every day, I stopped taking it for a couple days and then adjusted to .5mg. My symptoms ramped back up but this time were a bit milder. I tried that for a few days and then eventually had to stop from the side effects. My break lasted another couple days until I adjusted again to .25mg which gave me even milder side effects (stiff lower back, constipation, insomnia). I tried running with that for a week until I became fed up with my side effects and quit cold turkey. After quitting and for the following few days, I felt fine and healthy. Unfortunately, my side effects then returned and have persisted for the past 5 days. Currently, I wake up and feel healthy and fine. As the day progresses, my lower back and groin hurts more, and my stomach becomes more bloated. By night time, I am in significant lower back/groin pain (as of writing this) and my stomach becomes the most bloated. I wake up multiple times throughout the night but my insomnia has improved as of late. I also recently had an emotional episode followed by extreme emotional blunting (no desire to do anything) which is highly uncharacteristic for me (I’m generally a calm objective person). I also have had extreme racing heart even when my mind feels calm and at rest. I’m also finding myself to be more irritable. I may be suffering side effects related to my labido but have generally been unaware as my focus is typically on my pain, and gut pain always detracts from labido.

So far, the only pattern I’ve noticed is that I’m fine in the morning and can feel my symptoms onset and then worsen as the day progresses until they eventually become worst at night. The pain is strong (5/10) in the few hours before I eventually sleep. I eat extremely healthy (fruits/vegs every day, no processed foods) and take many important supplements daily (zinc, magnesium, fish oil, iodine, vitamin d) and have for at least the past two months. I’m desperate for a reprieve from this pain, and don’t know what to do. Please help.

Update: Yesterday and the day before yesterday the pain had generally subsided to a .5/10 so I decided to masturbate since I had not in a week from feeling ill constantly. Today, my side effects have returned and my back and lower stomach hurt at a 4/10 right now. Is it normal to have 2 good days randomly?

Update: It’s been 4 months since I quit Fin this Tuesday. I’ve had great success with symptoms generally subsiding, but things haven’t gone back to normal yet. I still get regular bloating daily, along with lower back pain or testicle pain occasionally. The past 2 days especially have had bad lower back pain. I’m back up to a 3/10 after a week or two of being 1/10 max. I feel like this may have been triggered by masturbation, but am uncertain. I am taking a probiotic, and have started trying DGL (among all my other supplements). My digestive problems are definitely due to adrenal fatigue, or pelvic floor problems, or slow digestion from something to do with the hormonal damage finasteride did. I will get new hormonal blood testing done if symptoms continue to worsen.

Don’t have sex or masturbate - that will help your body rest and recover.

Update: I still have not recovered back to 100%. Currently I get daily bloating in my colon, and still have constipation. This bloating is ONLY triggered by fiber (of any kind). The more fiber I eat, the more bloated I get. Green smoothies containing raw kale/spinach/carrots/blueberries/avocado make me bloat so much that it becomes painful in my lower stomach and lower back, and I also look pregnant. Sleeping seems to reduce bloating significantly, with a full return to flat stomach if I didn’t eat much fiber the previous night. Consuming no fiber for days results in a generally flat stomach. I can really eat anything (cheese, candy, milk, gluten, carbs, soda, whatever) aside from fiber without any problems. I’ve tried about 1000 different things so far to no avail. Doctors are never helpful as it’s gotten to the point where I’m more knowledgeable than them.

Clearly, fiber is fermenting in my bowels producing tons of gas, but I can’t figure out why. I still have long thin feces suggesting tightness in my colon/rectum. This also fits the lower back pain/tightness I have after eating fiber. Feces are always soft so it’s not the consistency of the bowel movement that is problematic. Things I’ve tried:

  • Probiotics (including fermented foods)
  • Digestive enzymes
  • No gluten/diary diet for months
  • TCA’s (currently taking tianeptine but not doing anything)
  • Betaine HCL
  • Eating a stellar diet of only healthy food

Things I haven’t tried:

  • Removing all fiber from diet for extended amount of time (months)
  • Fasting (i’m very underweight, constant painful bloating doesn’t help appetite)

If anyone has any suggestions, I’m game but I’m pretty sure there’s literally nothing else to try.
