FDA Approval Approval for hair loss NO
Dutasteride (Avodart) takes effect similarly to Propecia by inhibiting the formation of DHT. As DHT is the fundamental cause of genetic hair loss, blocking its formation is known to be one of the most effective ways to prevent male pattern hair loss.
As Dutasteride (Avodart) has not been deemed safe by the FDA for hair loss, Belgravia does not prescribe this medication.
When measuring side effects, and the time they take to leave one’s system, the term used is ‘half-life’. The half life of a product is the time that it takes for the product to decrease to half the amount in one’s body since the time the product was taken. Reports state that Dutasteride (Avodart) has a half-life of over 240 hours. This means that if you take 5mg of Dutasteride, 240 hours later you will still have 2.5mg of Dutasteride in your body, and 1.25mg, 240 hours after that. After 1 month there will still be 0.625mg present in your body.
Like with Propecia, certain sexual side effects are unlikely but possible. These include lowered libido, impotence or even testicular pain. The reason that Propecia is so safe is due to the fact that if side effects are experienced (under 2% of people) they will either disperse with continued use or as Propecia leaves the body so quickly (6-8 hour half-life), they will wear off within hours of stopping taking Propecia.
Side effects from Dutasteride are similar to those from Propecia but if they are experienced, they will last in the system for much longer. During the early stages of FDA trials there were cases of DHT levels only returning to 25% of their original levels almost 12 months after having discontinued the intake of Dutasteride. Therefore if side effects are experienced from Dutasteride it is possible that they could last for months or even longer.

Now the question is what happened with those individuals? If there was a further problem with them, which could be propably considered very serious, would Glaxo perform the next trial among Koreans in 2007??

Does anyone know what is the “cumulated” half life of dutasteride when undergoing 1-2years therapy?
