Tom F. Lue, M.D.
Dr. Tom Lue serves as the vice chairman of the UCSF department of urology. He is also the medical director of the Knuppe Molecular Urology Laboratory and professor of urology at UCSF.

Lue is an internationally recognized expert in the diagnosis and treatment of male sexual dysfunction, as well as penile physiology research. He is responsible for many of the major developments in this field.

In 1983, Lue was one of the first urologists in the country to offer penile injection for patients with erectile dysfunction. He also introduced duplex ultrasound for the determination of penile circulation and blood gas levels and ultrasound for differentiation of various types of priapism. In addition to caring for patients, Lue is actively pursuing many basic and clinical research projects.

He has made many important contributions to basic research and the clinical treatment of sexual dysfunction disorders. His team proved that a new class of compound enhances erection in animal experiments.

Three medications of this new class of compound (Viagra, Levitra and Cialis) have since become the most popular treatment for erectile dysfunction. Lue and his associates published the first article implicating TGF beta in the formation of Peyronie’s plaque, and developed the first animal model for the study of Peyronie’s disease. Lue also introduced colchicine as an effective medical therapy for Peyronie’s disease.

Lue graduated with highest honors from the Kaohsiung Medical College in Taiwan. He then went on to complete his urologic training at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Subsequently, Lue was awarded the Valentine Fellowship from the New York Academy of Medicine to study the neurophysiology of the genitourinary tract at UCSF’s department of urology.

He is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the American Urological Association’s Gold Cystoscope award and American Foundation of Urologic Disease’s, “Most Innovative Research Award.” In addition, Lue has authored or co-authored more than 380 publications and 12 books on male sexual dysfunction.
