Concerns over using ED Drugs during recovery

I am 44 years old and used Propecia/Proscar for over 10 years. I’m guessing for the last 5 or so, the side effects caught up with me before I really knew it and I probably should have quit some time ago. Well, I finally quit on June 16th this year and almost immediately started having morning wood again. It’s not like I was 16 but I can’t remember the last time prior to quitting when I actually had morning wood. I’m still however having trouble getting and maintaining an erection that is only about 60%. I have some of the other symptoms some of you speak of such as pain in the perineum (taint), fatigue and almost non-existent libido. To finally help myself recover and feel more confident in the bedroom, I have been using Cialis. My concern is that I read somewhere that ED medication damages the outer layer of the sperm cells. If that’s the case, I am also concerned about getting my significant other pregnant. so…

  1. Has anyone here, experiencing these similar Propecia side effects, done the same and has any information on this concern?

  2. I am open to the experience of others here that can provide me with alternative therapies so i don’t become reliant on another medication.

  3. Is there a doctor in/near Chicago that I could visit regarding these concerns?

Thanks in advance for your time and input.

Where did you read this? Please cite your sources. Personally I have never heard this, but then have not researched that specific issue as it relates to ED medications.

Horny Goat Weed is a natural PDE-5 inhibitor, much like Viagra… however it is not as potent and thus the chance for side effects is much less.

L-Arginine, Yohimbe, Maca and other supplements with may help with ED and libido are discussed in Natural Supplements section of this website.

Check DOCTORS section at bottom of site. Dr. Crisler is in Michigan, Dr Shippen is in Pennsylvania. You may want to consider seeing them.

Mew,

I believe I read it in Men’s Health but I will do some research and try to pinpoint the source for you. And thank you for your response.

P plus10, Dr. Crisler is a 4hr drive from you. Check the thread about seeing Dr. Crisler at the top of this forum. Another kid from this site drove there from Chicago back in March and is being treated by Crisler now as we speak. Go up and see him now as he is your best bet.

PS. MEW, I have been thinking about this for a while now. Especially because it comes up occasionally, statements on this site about the benefits of taking Viagra and ED drugs…and especially because so many of us mess with them. COULD YOU PLEASE MAKE A STICKY AT THE TOP OF MAYBE THE MEDICATION SECTION REGARDING SOMETHING ALONG THE LINES OF “sAFETY, pRECAUTIONS, AND EFFICACY WHEN USING ED DRUGS SUCH AS vIAGRA” OR SOMETHIG TO THAT NATURE, AND COULD WE POST ANY AVAILABLE STUDIES REGARDING MOST IMPORTANTLY THE DANGERS ASSOCIATED WITH ED DRUGS…?
Mainly so we dont eventually here a story pop up on here someday about some young man eventually LOSING his dick entirely due to priapism or something of that nature, because he took too much Viagra after reading discussions about it on thi site.

Because I still do believe that ED meds in moderation…e.g. maybe 3-4 times per week very well could be good for many of us. I would still love to read some clearly written info on taking the drugs to make sure I don’t ever run nto any problems.
And as you may know… the labels on many medications are not always too clear as to the real dangers and or side-effects associated with taking these meds regularly! I think this could be helpful to many here on this site, if we could start a thread on these ED medications…
Peace

I researched Horny Goat week a bit a few months ago. The active ingredient is icariin. Some of the studies in Europe use iicarin levels of over 60%.

Anyhow, the highest strength I could find in the U.S. was from this place Barlowe’s Herbal Elixirs, certified over 40% icariin IIRC. Most were like 10%.

Yohimbe can be dangerous to us middle age folks, can cause heart problems.

Hi everybody,

during a clinical elective i’ve been at the department of urology for 2 weeks, and there they treated men after total prostatectomy(50/50% chance of getting impotent) with a permanent ed-medication(50mg viagra/day) for 1-2 years with pretty good results at restoring function.
So it was not only used in a symptomatic but also in a curative way. Has something to to with PDE inhibitors reducing fibrosis by reducing TGF-beta. As far as i know a longterm treatment is also used for ed caused by diabetic conditions. As long as you dont suffer from cardio-vascular conditions , side effects are well tolerable in common( i know they said the same thing about propecia :imp: ). Priapism caused by PDE inhibitors is rather a myth. It is much more common if u use direct prostaglandin injections or if you suffer from blood diseases like sickle cell anaemia or leukemia. I just wanted to say that viagra is mostly seen as a lifestyle drug(which is a problem because health insurance companies in common wont pay for it )but it can be far more than that.
