Brain Fog "Attack"

Hello All.

I started taking finasteride a bit over a year ago for hair loss. I had an occasional “foggy” day, but the never lasted so I didn’t worry about it. In fact, some people who claimed to have brian fog on finasteride and hair loss forums were told it was all in their heads.

Then, a little over two weeks ago, I had a rather sudden “attack” of somewhat severe brain fog. I been really tired that morning and, after going to a 9 o’clock meeting, decided to go home and take a nap. I couldn’t figure out why I was so tired – I’d slept well the night before. Anyway, I couldn’t sleep when I got home so I went back into the office.

I started to get dizzy. As I was typing on my computer keyboard, I kept hitting two letters at once – I mean two or three times per word. I started making numerous spelling errors, but I couldn’t figure out why. At one point, I just couldn’t remember where the apostrophe was. I was hungry, and just chalked it up to low blood sugar.

Anyway, 2 o’clock rolled around and I had another meeting. I got up to go to the meeting and was bumping things all over the office. I’d forgotten those things were there. I went to the meeting, where we were supposed to discuss various documents. I was going to discuss the first document…and I couldn’ get the words out. And when they finally did come out, I stumbled all over myself and even slurred my speech a little.

I began to worry that I’d had a stroke, or maybe even the beginnings of a brain tumor, but thought I’d wait the weekend and see if it got better. It did not, so I called my doctor on Monday and set up an appointment for later that week. I’d improved slightly by the time I saw my doctor, but not much. He scheduled a CAT scan and blood test. They came up negative.

The symptoms I’ve had include the usual suspects:

Trouble speaking; I stumble over myself often – it seems like I can’t find the right words. This is very annoying and scary.

Difficulty concentrating and confusion – it seems like I can’t hold a thought in my head for more than a few seconds.

Insomnia.

Irritability.

Lack of motivation.

I’m cold, even when the room temp is in the low 70s.

Lack of coordination. For a week it was difficult to sign my same to anything, and it didn’t look at all like my signature.

I had no idea this was caused by Finasteride until I found this web site. Thank god I found it soon after my problems began. I stopped taking it last Thursday and have improved since, but the symptoms described above are still with me. Two questions:

Did anybody, like me, take finasteride for a while with no problems and then have them come on quite suddenly and rather severely?

How long would you estimate it will take me to recover?

Thanks for your responses.

Wow. One of the first things I noticed when things started to go wrong was my signature as well! I all of a sudden had difficulty signing my name. It’s as if the connection to my hand was bad and I couldn’t get the flow to come out of my head through my hand. It was very choppy and rigid. That’s the first I’ve heard anyone else mention their signature. Interesting

Yep got the same problem too. I cant sign my name right anymore. I mess up when I do the cursive all the time.

paolo beck peccoz (androlog)gave my a list of blood tests to test…i ve ur same symptoms…brain fog, anxiety, can t stay relaxed, nervous etc… the most blood tests he prescribed me are about thyroid; maybe propecia could have helped us to get an ipo/iper thyroid ;tha’s could be an answer about all this stress on our mind and body…tom i’ll have the blood tests and i ll post the results .

what do u think?

You know, my doctor also thought thought there was an outside chance it could be my thyroid. In a way, I was hoping it was, because there’s medication for that. So they did an ultra-sound exam of my thyroid. There was nothing in the ultrasound or the blood test that indicated there was anything wrong with my thyroid either.

Ive been off finasteride for exactly one week and things have really improved, especially in the last two days. I still have a little confusion and I stumble in my speech a little too. But the depression is gone, the emotional flatness is gone, I don’t misspell too many words (I always immediately recognized the words were misspelled, but I couldn’t understand why I was doing it in the first place), and I can sign my name.

I’m lucky I found this web site so quickly after my problem started to emerge. If I hadn’t, I’d’ve kept taking finasteride and that could have been disasterous. I’m a college teacher and I had some really bad lectures for a week or so, but I’m doing okay now.

I’d say I’m about 75 percent…and continuing to improve.

DZENY, glad to hear your improving, the confounding brain fog issue can be devastating (believe me, I know). For most people who develop mental side effects using fin - especially in this case anxiety - it tends to dissipate gradually once they cease taking the drug. For others, it persists and impedes our normal functioning, very frustrating indeed. Just be glad you’re sexually intact after downing that deceptive, vile garbage.

To be honest, this is the first place Doctors look because low thyroid hormone is associated with depression and confusion, but for many of the examples on this forum, thyroid levels are generally fine, mine included. I doubt the thyroid is what’s behind the mental symptoms, but it’s good to have it checked (and DEFINITELY the adrenal hormones as well).

BTW how’s your progress with the GHB and ACTH? You have made improvements have you not?

i used ghb for 2 weeks long, and 1 week after a week stop…but i had to stop cause my doc doesn’t want to prescribe it no more…he s a bastard.

now there are days where i feel really good and my energy and face is well too and sex is well too…it all depends from the day .

at times sex is 95% ,at times it s some less… about brain fog,i can see it depends how i sleep at night and from my stressed mind .

now i ve another doc that prescribes me ghb,but i ll wait to take it unless i ll have with me a good ammount of ghb to have a one mouth treatment… here in italy we have ghb in small doses bottles (i use 1 bottle for 3 days)and i don t want to start using it risking that my doc ll not prescribe it no more … i need a one mouth long bottles treatment with me and i ll start it again cause it really helped .

one more thing…i know it by my improvements that 4 sure it’s right speaking about % of our recovery ,but i can say that i remember considering me 90% some times ago and now i can say 90% too,but now it’s so different…i didn’t remember what 90 % was…and i ll do the same in the future (i hope) it’s like that everytime u improve,(at least 4me) u forget the point where u were and u use a different unit of % to explicit ur recovery… for ex my 80-90% recovery of now is so different from the 80% that it was 1-2 mouths ago…

now i feel so more sensations than before,i remember so much my real person looking at the mirrow or feeling my penis;so i think i ll consider me recovered when i ll not really… and real recovery has to come little by little .

last thing (i still don’t have always/100% strong erections at morning) but i can get them 90%-100% if i have to .

I have hypothyroidism before i started fin. I just want you guys to know that you have to check your FREE t4 and FREE t3 if you want to see if your true thyroid results. You do need your TSH which looks at the overall production of horomones. But Free’s are the active horomones. The new standard for normal thyroid range is now 0.3 - 3.0. However if someone is feeling fine with a 4 or 5 of a tsh level then I wouldnt take medicine even though that is considered hypo. T3 is you fatigue, hair growth, muscle aches, and weight gaining symptoms I think. You can do a search if you want to learn more. However most docs think the range is .03-5.5 which is now wrong. Its all over the web from the National Endocrinology Ass. that its .03 - 3.0.

Oh and italy, I think its normal not to always have erections in the morning. I am fine down there and dont always have them in the morning. Just 80% of the time I do. Just thought Id add some info that Ive learned.

Italysideeffect, how long did it take for you to really start feeling very well? How long have you been off to reach your “new 90 %”?

about thyroid u can do more bloodtest than just tsh ft3 and ft4…u can do pth ab tg-ab tpo-calcius etc…take a look.
it took 3 years with just small improvements… after acth things were better;on ghb i really started to feel things turning well…i stopped it and in 1 mouth i improved more,i repeat that it deps from the days, some i feel great ,other i still feel shit…but i want to go back on my ghb cause it s so good for me .

about erections,i feel more horny at general,i ve night erections, but not always strong, weak at times…ii can get them, most of the time at full ,other less…i repeat,it deps from the day…but i m feeling i m doing good and that ghb is a very important option to choose.

Yeah I know some of those test look at the thyroid which might be other problems then hypo or hyper thyroidism. The PTH is for HypoPARAthyroidism which has to do with balancing calicum in the body. The most common is Hasimotos which is Hypothyroidism. Im just saying I have Hypothyroidism and have researched it alot and the main test are TSH and FREE t’s. T3 total Reverse t3 or T3 uptake are pointless. The Free’s measure the active horomones in your body. Not trying to argue, just thought Id try to help.

Can having an abortion cause a thyroid condition? I know that the thyroid gland has a lot to do with hormones in the body. Can having an abortion trigger a under or over active thyroid? Thanks!
