Age

It seems that there’s a disproportionate number of younger guys on here (20’s and 30’s) - has this been discussed?

Could there be a link between PFS and a gene/predisposition to early onset hairloss in the first place? Could it be that our bodies/hormones didn’t fully mature before taking Propecia?

Or - could it be that there’s in fact a wide range of ages but older men don’t seek out as much support/help because libido and test are expected to drop with age anyways?

Any thoughts?

i would assume its because most people start on propecia in their 20s or 30s.

The majority of men who have male pattern baldness, start losing hair in their 20’s and 30’s, that s the reason. I was fully matured when i took propecia at 24. In fact i always looked older in my teens, when i was 14 people thought i was already 18 or so because i had a full beard and chest hair.

Its an interesting question. When I saw a urologist a while back, I was his first Propecia related instance, but his counter argument was that he prescribes Finasteride in the form of Proscar regularly to older men and has never heard of or dealt with any patients speaking of long term side effects after quitting the drug.

Is this because we are more susceptible in our younger years to the side effects? Or are people in their later years dismissing their sexual issues as a part of their age and not relating it directly to the drug? Its an interesting question.

This, most definitely.

It is an interesting point. I was also thinking about it.

  • First of all, most of the people take Propecia in their 20s and 30s as hairloss begins at that age.
  • I took Finasteride at the age of 23. Perhaps our bodies weren’t so mature. Finasteride is not allowed for people under the age of 18. As everybody develops differently how can you draw a line at the age of 18?
  • Older people (people in their 50s) who take Proscar might attribute their loss of sexuality due to their increasing age and don’t know that it could be Finasteride! Furthermore, older people do not have such a high affinity to the internet and simply don’t find our website.

I am not sure youth makes you more likely to get PFS. I started fin at 24 and, after an initial increase in libido, started to get sides like lowered sex drive and a bit of weight gain which I can only see now in hindsight. However, I always ‘recovered’ whenever I ‘quit’ (ie when I ran out of pills). It was only hitting my 30s that PFS nailed me, so I don’t think youth had anything to do with it.

I do wonder why more guys who took fin for BPH don’t turn up here. I can only recall reading one post from an older BPH proscar user on this forum. There must be something in this; this site is very easy to find if you have proscar side effects and I don’t buy the argument that older men just accept ED or are internet illiterate. That may have been the case 10 or even 5 years ago but not now. Plus there are users on here in their 50s and 60s who took it for hairloss. Going by the Topix page on proscar sides there are a few men complaining of long term effects, but not many considering how many millions more men use it for that.

Could it be that men who had enlarged or infected prostates already and took finasteride for medicinal rather than cosmetic reasons were less likely to be permanently damaged?
