9 Years on Fin - Looking to Quit

Hi all. First off, I just want to write that I’m aware I technically shouldn’t be on this forum, because I’m in the process of quitting, as opposed to having already quit. But I’m feeling quite scared and alone right now, and need some advice from this forum–which to me are the de facto experts. I want to quit finasteride, and do everything in my power to minimize PFS. Here is a little bit of my story.

I’ve been taking 1mg of finasteride daily since January 30th, 2006, which is 9 years + 3 months on the treatment. I was 22 years old when I started, and I’m now 31. When I began the treatment in January 2006, I experienced zero observable side effects, so it was an easy decision for me to stay the course. I had a very high and functioning sex drive prior to finasteride, and that didn’t change when I began the drug.

However, over the last 4-or-so years, I’ve been accumulating side effects: I’ve experienced a marked drop in my sex drive and libido. My sex drive and libido are still functioning, but let’s just say they’re operating at 30% (if that) of where it should be for a man my age (low libido, way less interest in sex, weak orgasms, less ejaculate, loss of morning/nocturnal erections, achieving erections takes more work, maintaining erections takes more work, etc.).

Here is a timeline of my experience with the drug. You’ll note that sometime in 2012/2013 (I can’t recall the exact month), I switched from cutting Proscar into 1/5ths, to buying 1mg tabs of generic finasteride.

Year 01 | Age 22 | 2006 | 1/5th of Proscar tab daily | No observable side effects
Year 02 | Age 23 | 2007 | 1/5th of Proscar tab daily | No observable side effects
Year 03 | Age 24 | 2008 | 1/5th of Proscar tab daily | No observable side effects
Year 04 | Age 25 | 2009 | 1/5th of Proscar tab daily | No observable side effects
Year 05 | Age 26 | 2010 | 1/5th of Proscar tab daily | No observable side effects
Year 06 | Age 27 | 2011 | 1/5th of Proscar tab daily | No observable side effects
Year 07 | Age 28 | 2012 | 1/5th of Proscar tab daily | Low Libido
Year 08 | Age 29 | 2013 | 1 mg Finasteride tab daily | Low Libido
Year 09 | Age 30 | 2014 | 1 mg Finasteride tab daily | Low Libido
Year 10 | Age 31 | 2015 | 1 mg Finasteride tab daily | Low Libido

I’m baffled why side effects would begin after so many years of being side-effect free. I’m an otherwise above-average healthy person: I eat very clean, run, bicycle, weight lift regularly, and I’m fit.

At any rate, after thinking it over, I’ve decided to stop the drug. However, after reading online of PFS, and of people’s endocrine systems collapsing, I’m terrified. I’m terrified to stay on the drug, I’m terrified to get off the drug–but it’s something I must do.

I know there’s no evidence that tapering limits PFS over quitting cold turkey, but from what I’ve read, people lean toward tapering. I’ve read the FAQ, and now I’m trying to formulate a tapering regimen.

Any advice on what this should look like? A combination of slowly lowering doses, and skipping days seems to be the preferred approach, but how exactly? 1mg EOD for a month, then 0.5 EOD for a month, then 0.25mg EOD for a month, then ~0.125mg EOD for a month, then ~0.125mg every third day for a month, then ~0.125mg every fourth day for a month, and so on? What exactly does a good tapering regimen look like?

This week, I’m also going to get some baseline diagnostic work done, incase something goes wrong. I’m also considering having a sperm test, and putting some sperm into storage, for the same reason.

Any help would be much appreciated.

  1. Where are you from (country)?
    Canada

  2. How did you find this forum (Google search – if so, what search terms? Via link from a forum or website – if so, what page? Other?)
    HairlossTalk

  3. What is your current age, height, weight?
    31, 5’8’’, ~180 lbs

  4. Do you excercise regularly? If so, what type of excercise?
    Running, cycling, weight lifting

  5. What type of diet do you eat (vegetarian, meat eater, raw, fast-food/organic healthy)?
Clean eater. Lots of vegetables and fruits. Whole grains. Wild fish. Occasional meat. 2-3L of water per day. Healthy fats (fish, fish oils, hemp seeds, chia seeds, nuts, avocado, etc.). Limited dairy.

  6. Why did you take Finasteride (hair loss, BPH, other)?
    hair loss

  7. For how long did you take Finasteride (weeks/months/years)?
    9 years, 3 months.

  8. How old were you, and WHEN (date) did you start Finasteride?
I was 22 years old. First dose was January 30th, 2006.

  9. How old were you when you quit, and WHEN (date) did you quit?
I’m still taking it, and I’m currently 31. Wanting to quit now. Joined the board to learn more on how I can limit PFS.

  10. How did you quit (cold turkey or taper off)?
    To be determined.

  11. What type of Finasteride did you use – Propecia, Proscar, Fincar or other generic?
Proscar and generic proscar for the first 5 years, cut into 1/5ths. Generic 1mg finasteride for the last 4 years.

  12. What dose did you take (eg. 1 mg/day, 1 mg every other day etc.)?
1 mg daily, every morning. I missed the occasional dose here and there over the years, with no observable impact. The longest I ever went without a dose was 3 days, with no observable impact.

  13. How long into your use of Finasteride did you notice the onset of side effects?
Side effects gradually accumulated beginning in year 5. I didn’t become cognizant of them until about year 7, but was unsure if it was finasteride causing them, or something else. But in year 9, and today (10th year), I’m now confident finasteride is affecting me negatively, and that my side effects are due to finasteride.

  14. What side effects did you experience while on the drug that have yet to resolve since discontinuation?
I’m still on the drug, so side effects are present.

  1. What (if any) treatments have you undertaken to recover from your side effects since discontinuation of the drug?
None, yet. Seeking more information, in the event my side effects persist after quitting.

  2. If you have pre or post-Finasteride bloodtests, what hormonal changes have you encountered since discontinuing the drug (pls post your test results in the “Blood Tests” section and link to them in your post)?
    N/A

  3. Anything not listed in the above questions you’d like to share about your experience with Finasteride?

  4. Tell us your story, in your own words, about your Finasteride usage and side effects experienced while on/off the drug.

I wrote a long story and posted it in the general forum. It’s waiting for Admin approval, but I’m unsure how to retrieve it and paste it here. If it’s possible to do, I’d like to share that story here. I put a little effort into compiling it.

Hi. I think that I have already read you before on hairlosstalk.com

If I were you I would tapper off for some months. Any plan is ok. For instance: take 0,5mg daily 1st week , next week 0,5 mg Day on day off, then 0,250 day on-off, 0,125 day on day off, then 0,125 twice a week, then 0,125 once a week, if you are able to cut it smaller do it. And take the smallest (I think that 0,0625 is ok but search for information about finasteride pharmacinetic behaviour and make your plan) once a month two times and quit completely.

It is unknown if tappering off can prevent PFS, but if you have been on it for so long and have bearable sides it makes sense to tapper. I guess it may be “better” 10 years treatment and 4-6 months tappering off than 10 years and quitting cold turkey.

You possibly avoid some symptoms like Tinnitus and other sides that can happen when quitting a drug suddenly.

Also I would have bloodworks before quitting and afterquitting.

In my opinion you have done it right by coming here prior to quit. Please update your evolution afterquitting.

Furthermore, dont you really think that you experienced other sides?

Like more fatigued, emotionally and physically weaker, concentration troubles. Even just sometimes?

I know drug is supposed to affect everyone differently, but I is hard to me to believe that it worked for you maintaining your hair, that is lowering considerably your DHT levels, and do not feel sides.

One of the purposes of this page is to get propecia out of the legal market by demonstrating that it is not safe for health. It is needed that every user is sincere about how it really felt on that sh… On the other hand I know it is difficult to remember your prefin and first months treatment situation after so many years, even you dont know how would you be naturally at your age without finasteride. They are factors that play in pharmaceutics favor.

Sorry for being that forthright.

Sincerely I understand your fears. Best of luck. We will try to help you if needed.

Before you completely stop fin please go and get full blood test(including Adrenal hormones too) and if possible saliva tests as will. This will help you understand how your hormones change in later months, and maybe fixing only those hormone will help you, should something goes wrong.
About quitting my advice, reduce quantity not the frequency. If you reduce frequency, it will create a wave with crest and trough, you need a constant straight line decline.

To be honest, I don’t believe I’ve experienced any other side effects. At least none that have been observable. And over the first 5 years, I didn’t detect any observable side effects. For the next 1-2 years, they accumulated slowly, so it was difficult to even notice. It’s only in the last few years where I’m more confident that Finasteride is affecting me by means of lowered libido, loss of nocturnal/morning erections, less ejaculate, etc.

I have an appointment with my doctor on Thursday. I’m going to ask for blood work, to get a baseline. I hope he is cooperative. Where I live, healthcare is public, so there’s a chance he may perceive my detailed bloodwork requests as excessive. Fingers crossed he agrees.

I have two days to figure out everything I need to get tested. But I’m new to this, so I’m not sure of all the hormones that need testing.

I’m looking at a standard blood work diagnostic requisition form that is used where I live, and here’s what’s under Endocrine tests:

Cortisol AM (8:00-10:00)
Cortisol PM (15:00-17:00)
DHEAS
Estradiol
FSH
LH
Progesterone
Prolactin
PTH* calcium___
quant. HCG
TSH (only)
TSH (progressive testing)
Testosterone am (8:00-10:00)
Testosterone pm (15:00-17:00)

Should I get them all (minus the pm cortisol and testosterone tests)?

Here is some more information from my most recent blood work, taken on December 9th, 2014.

Testosterone (tested between 8-10am): 14.8 nmol/L
Reference Range: 10.3-29.5 nmol/L

Intact Parathyroid Hormone: 2.3 pmol/L
Reference Range: 1.4-6.8 pmol/L

I will try to get all my historic endocrine blood work data when I see my doctor this Thursday.
