  3. Anything not listed in the above questions you’d like to share about your experience with Finasteride?

  4. Tell us your story, in your own words, about your Finasteride usage and side effects experienced while on/off the drug.

I started taking finasteride in late 2009 after i read about the drug on a hair loss website. I decided to skip using minoxidil and go straight to finasteride after reading about the improved effectiveness of finasteride and seeing various user accounts of success. I read about how it had the potential for side effects, however these apparently only affected a small percentage, and those that did experience side effects would likely see them subside after continued use (worst lie ever) and ESPECIALLY once you discontinued use of the drug.

A summary of my usage patter is as follows:

3 months @ 1mg per day in late 2009
22 months straight from August 2010 to June 2012 @ 0.5mg per day; then
4 months straight from July 2012 to October 2012 @0.5 EOD; then
2 months straight from November 2012 to 6 January 2013 @0.25mg 2x a week.

During the first 3 months i saw great progress in hair growth, although after i didnt see side effects (mainly sexual) subside, i quit using and within a week saw my sexual function return to its pre-fin state - my mind was relieved as i was not one of the dreaded “few” who saw persistate effects. Life went on.

In August 2010, i went through particularly stressful times during my post graduate studies (failed an exam) and put extreme pressure on myself. I saw a massive increase in hairloss during this time and panicked. I started taking fin again, but this time thought “if i lower the dosage to 0.5mg/day, maybe i will not get sexual side effects”. Sure enough, sexual side effects returned quickly. Instead of quitting, i convinced myself that the side effects might subside if i persisted with the drug…just as the studies claimed! It didnt quite work out that way, however, seeing as i wasnt in a relationship, i managed to get by, by skipping a day or 2 if i had a sexual romp with a girl “planned”. This seemed to work out relatively well as i saw the majority of my sexual function come back from skipping a day or two. Of course, side effects would resume once i resumed use.

In May 2012, i met my girlfriend of 7 months. I decided that i would again lower the dosage to combat the side effects. After some initial response, my body “adjusted” and the side effects remained just as strong. By November 2012, i was becoming increasingly depressed that i couldnt have sex with my girlfriend spontaeously as maintaining an erection for any length of time was impossible. I chose to limit my use to 0.25mg 2x a week with the intention of tapering off for good. By the end of december 2012 i had broken up with my gf (surely sexual frustration played a part) and on 6 January 2013 i took my last ever 0.25mg dose of that poision.

Looking back, i was terrified that if i stopped my fin use, my hair loss of August 2010 would return, even though a good portion of that hair loss was stress related. In October 2010 i started using minoxidil foam which i still use to this day. Needless to say, even after quitting fin, my hair is still in good state, and definitely not in the state in was at August 2010. Whether this is purely due to minoxidil or whether my hormones have been “supressed” i cant say for sure.

Since quitting, i experience peaks and troughs in relation to my side effects. The first 2.5 months after i quit for good were scary. I thought i ruined my body and struggled with the PFS crash. I got my bloodwork done and then for the next month i felt like i was on the road to recovery. Erections were noticeably stronger and longer lasting and i was feeling more energetic. However, the last week or so has seemed to be a bit of a downturn again. Im not sure why my body is doing as my bloodwork has come back with “healthy” levels. The doctor told me he has spoken to an endocrinologist who has seen a patient suffer with the same PFS symptoms for 4 months before recovering. The doctor seems optimistic, but after reading stories on here, i am less so. I will post my bloodwork 2.5 months after quitting shortly.

The inability to maintain an erection, combined with the peaks and troughs of recovery and side effects leaves me doubting myself all the time sexually (which further compounds the issue).

Keep in mind a couple things.

  1. You can’t compare your story to anyone else’s. PFS is so radically different for everyone it’s a waste of time trying to figure out when you might recover based on when other people recover or not. People have taken it for a decade, quit, and were fine immediately. People have taken 1 pill and been fucked for years, and everything in between. Your body is your body, and your PFS situation is unique to you. You could randomly recover next month for all you know. The only thing you should take from the stories of other people is what maybe made them feel a bit better, like jogging or taking zinc or whatever.

  2. The forum is not an accurate representation of recovery rate. I have many recovery stories on here saved that are not in the recovery section. I’ve also seen recoveries elsewhere. You also have to factor in the large number of users that posted their story and then disappeared, and people who never signed up here in the first place and recovered. You can get better, it’s just the uncertainty of when you’ll get better that’s the killer. That’s what really gets me down, for sure. It would probably be wise to avoid the forum, and if you absolutely must log in, just read threads like Chi’s. That guy had it bad and through a lot of hard work he beat PFS. You can too.

That’s true and i understand that.

Hey mate- whereabouts in Aus are you? I’m finding it difficult to find a doc who is wiling to listen…

I’m in Sydney.

Brief update:

It’s been almost a year since taking my last finasteride dose. I have seen some mild recovery, varying from weeks of great improvement in ED and libido symptoms to weeks where i feel flat.

For months i was taking the following every night:

Vit D3 - 4000iu
Zinc - 25mg
L-Citrulliene - 1.5g
L-Arginine - 1mg
Horny Goat Weed - 2 tablets

I saw some noticeable recovery in morning erections and fullness of erections and could maintain them for longer. I wasnt back to 100% but at my best i would say i was back to 75-80%. I also commenced weight lifting about 3 months ago which i would say has had some positive effect.

Im going away on holidays for a couple of weeks so have stopped all supplements, which could be a reason why im feeling flat this week with stronger ED symptoms than in the past.

Bloodwork done about 2.5 months after quitting fin showed that im “healthy”. Keep in mind that when i ordered this bloodwork i was sure that i would find that my testosterone was low. A brief summary (will provide more if requested):

Tetosterone: 20nmol/L (8.3-29) --this converts to 576 ng/dl for you Americans.
Free testosterone: 57.3 pmol/L (25-120)
SHBG: 23 nmol/L (11-71)
DHEAS: 7.9 umol/L (3-10)
Vitamin D: 47 (51-200)
FSH: 4 IU/L (<7 for males <60 yrs)
LH: 4.2 IU/L (<7 for males <60 yrs)
OEST2: 114 pmol/L (<150 for males <60 yrs)

I am thinking of going back to see my doctor in 3 months to discuss meeting with an Endo. By then, i will have been off the drug for almost 15 months.

I definitely think the mental game plays a part in it, however the symptoms are real and effect your mental space.

I’ve been a lot more relaxed mentally about all of this and know that time plays a role. Accordingly, I have tried not to pursue any sexual relationship with a girl over the past year as i have sexual anxiety that is a result of the side effects ive previously experienced. I’ve had sex using cialis (works great as my mind is so relaxed) and once with no cialis (finished quick due to anxiety).

Overally, i Do feel somewhat better but knowing how i used to feel (i could of f*cked a fire hydrant on a moments notice), i am not satisfied in where im at just yet.

I should mention that i have continued to take Minox foam during all this, but i dont think that is too relevant due to its general lack of sexual sides.

Update for you guys

It’s been a while. I dont check these forums anymore.

Im happy to say that i dont have any side effects to report anymore. It has been several years now that ive been off propecia (i just use rogaine foam twice daily).

I used to take all sorts of multivitamins, especially Vitamin D (which i still take), L-arginine and Citruline a few hours before sex (this seemed to help, at least in overcoming the mental hurdles).

If my libido is lower than it was pre finasteride, i would credit that to now being 33 rather than 24. Still, i no longer have any issues with getting or maintaining sexual function.

Where i started to notice a real turnaround was back in 2014 when i fell in love. It sounds silly, but this did WONDERS for my anxiety and overall mental state and helped me relax sexually. I really do think winning back your mind is half the battle, perhaps more. Who knows, i was probably fixed earlier but my mind was still lost up until i met the love of my life.

Working out at the gym is also something i would recommend. Nothing gives your hormones and your self esteem a boost like lifting weights REGULARLY.

Never give up home, but never discount the battle that is winning your mind back.
