Why does my libido come back day after drinking alcohol?

I completely stopped drinking years ago as PFS totally zeroed out my alcohol tolerance. After many years (and after a lot of physical recovery) I can go and have an alcohol heavy night again if I want. Yesterday I was out with some old friends and it seems that after a few short drinks that have some mind relaxing effect I definitely have higher libido. Drinking is absolutely not my table but this mood enhancing effect of alcohol is wonderful.

Hey guys,

I’ve done a lot of research on this and experienced the same affect from alcohol and I’d like to say I think it is DEFINITELY an affect of lutienzing hormone first and foremost. Here’s why:

The effect described above is definitely accurate. Ethanol (from alcohol) is toxic to leydig cells in the testes that produce testosterone so it lowers T output pretty quickly when you drink it. However this drop in testosterone and attack on leydig cells, as explained above, triggers the creation of LH. It’s called a “hormetic response” when a toxin is administered in a dose that is low enough to initiate a stress response from the body that overcomes the toxins effects. In this case, theoretically, you drink the booze, your body goes “woah, something’s inhibitting t production, better signal for more” and thus luteinzing hormone is manufactured.

Secondly, there’s a lot of anecdotal evidence (I see it all the time on forums and from people who really monitor their hormones) that luteinzing hormone is actually more important to your libido than testosterone is. I know that sounds crazy to a lot of people, but I see it on every forum I read:

  • men go on TRT and their libido is not improved even at high doses of exogenous T

  • their libido only improves when they either

A) fix the production of LH and the functioning of the entire androgen cycle naturally
B) go on HcG which mimics the effects of luteinzing hormone.

In summary: alcohol stimulates LH production as a sort of stress response. LH is responsible for increasing your libido.

Hope my perspective helps.

Hello this has happened to, me today.

I went out. I drink near 1/2 bottke of whisky. With that in the past I would be with the face in the floor, but as already I think it has been discussed PFS affects how alcohol affects us. Another proof that something inside the brain was modify.

I was “nearly” interest in sex again. But today I masturbated and more or less feeled good, like the old times. Less anedhonia and some pleasure at watching tits & stuff ( I watched porn).

Think the scientific reasoning was that low Allopreganolone (from inhibited 5AR) lessened the response to alcohol.

Just as I quit the drug I remember getting heavily drunk and feeling nothing beyond poor co-ordination.

2 years on and I feel alcohol much like I did prior to Propecia, which I think shows that allopreganolone levels probably to return to baseline eventually.

But then why do I react more different to alcohol post-Fin than on-Fin? I mean I started feeling different after drinking post-Fin. Not while on the drug even though 5AR was also inhibited back then.

Alcohol has little effect on me, 2.5 years into PFS. I haven’t tried drinking heavily since PFS, but now when I drink an amount of alcohol that would have given me a strong buzz in the past, e.g. half bottle of wine, I just feel happy and actually a little sharper, mentally. However, I get no buzz feeling at all. As far as libido, alcohol doesn’t do a whole lot.

This is a fascinating thread. Anyone out there who is paying attention, can anyone give me there results on LIBIDO with the following treatments:

  • benzodiazepine/Bromazepam - I’ve heard this get mentioned a lot for help with insomnia, but how did it affect libido and other sides?
  • HcG - How did this affect libido? Any other effects?
  • Sustain Alpha - Did this have an effect on Libido?
  • Vitamin E - Did this have an effect on Libido?
  • Bromocriptine, Cabergoline - Libido effect?
  • Dopa Mucuens - I’ve tried it, doesn’t seem to have any effect. Direct precursor to Dopamine

Thank you, getting more blood tests done this week. Started Cialis which seems to have a tiny effect, not really noticing much help with my erections though. Really trying to explore what is affecting our low libido.

I used to have long-lasting morning wood on days after drinking. This effect seems to have entirely faded away in the past few years. :slightly_frowning_face:

I am an Accutane guy and have read that this rebound from alcohol is also common among individuals with PSSD.

Out of your short list, bromocriptine and cabergoline stood out. I started taking bromocriptine after having a few tests with high(ish) prolactin and reading about recreational use to decrease refractory period. The first day I took it was amazing. I was able to perform twice in a matter of an hour the next morning. The effect was never as pronounced again after that, but I stayed on it from 2004-2008, with a few intermissions and noticed it did raise libido slightly and improved mood while I was taking it. Hard to explain, but it did feel as if I was bypassing the root problem at some level to boost libido and mood.

I would have nausea and see flutters of light in my field of vision for about an hour after taking 2.5mg. I also found myself gritting my teeth for no reason and felt it might have contributed to worsening my daytime fatigue. Began to have concerns about heart-valve issues as a potential side-effect and stopped in late 2008.

Was it worth it? I can’t really say.

Tried cabergoline once in 2010 and it gave me a window of libido the morning after taking it, but a severe headache came along with it.

These were 2 out of only 5 things that improved libido in any way for me. This is out of hundreds of supplements and drugs. Wow, I feel like a walking toxic waste dump by saying that. Tried several other dopaminergics and they didn’t do anything
