What is considered low libido?

Hi everyone,
what is considered low libido? If you have low libido are you still attracted to girls? I mean will you still look at a pretty girl if she walks by but not have any sexual urges? I can understand not having any sexual urges, but to what degree are you attracted to girls would be my question.

Thanks alot

dl1979

When I see a pretty girl, I think she looks attractive, but I have no sexual stimulation/urges from looking at her. I know that I WANT to be sexually stimulated and that I am SUPPOSED to be sexually stimulated, but that feeling is gone now, thanks to propecia. Its low libido.

Dear Worried

Thanks for your response. If a person has a low libido what will happen when they try to masterbate? Will they be able to get an erection, considering they have not too much erectile dysfunction.

I don’t feel i have problems with libido, mainly my nocturnal erections are much more rare and softer, and my morning erections are gone. It also takes longer to achieve an erection.

Thanks

If you have no libido, you have no urge or desire for sex. No more fantasizing about sex, heart pounding excitement when it comes to sex/girls, butterflies in stomach… its like looking at a plate of delicious food, but you’re not hungry. Lust has been drained from your body and you are simply not horny.

Loss of libido doesn’t mean that physicallyyou are unable to acheive an erection via manual stimulation, or that there is anything physically wrong with your penis. But libido is important for non-contact erections to take place, in anticipation of the act itself, as one gets “turned on”, and to help maintain the erection during sexual activity without manual stimulation (if one has no mechanical problems with their penis, ie bloodflow etc).

Guys with raging libidos and erectile dysfunction likely have an organic, physical problem with the penis/erectile mechanism… bloodflow issues, decreased nitric oxide production, tissue changes from smooth muscle to collagenous fibres etc. This could be due to androgen deprivation (ie, DHT) from drugs such as Finasteride. In these cases, drugs like Viagra can help – you are already horny, you just can’t phyiscally obtain the erection as easily as you normally would. This is a big difference compared to having no libido, which usually drives the erection in the first place.

Thanks alot for the response Mew
I don’t feel i have a problem with libido, I am concerned with the physical aspects of my erection. Not having morning erections and weak nocturnal erections scares me, because i would remember the pre fin days of going to the bathroom in the morning, and having to wait until my erection goes down because it was so stiff. Now every morning I wake up with no erections, or if there is,it will be gone seconds after i get up.
Could it be possible that finasteride can affect the physical side of erections and not the libido? It seems they are related, but i don’t have libido issues, i’m pretty sure. Just weaker performance. I have read that it is common for men to have morning erections going strong into their 40s- 50s. I am only 29.

Thanks again

I have also lost all my morning erections. I also used to have to wait for my erection to go down every morning before I went to the bathroom. Wow, the more I think about it, there really DOES seem to be a physical cause for all this.

Morning/nocturnal erections are tied to Total & Free Testosterone levels, as well as DHT levels. It all goes hand in hand, the physical and hormonal.

It’s possible a hormonal imbalance created by Fin (androgen deprivation) could cause tissue changes/dysfunction which may not necesarily revert to normal after stopping the drug, even if hormone levels come back online.

Are you saying Mew that there may be phyical tissue changes in the penis which affects why the penis cannot get a full erection at night during sleep? It is interesting because for me i can still get a full manual erection but it just takes longer. I am wondering why I cannot get a full nocturnal erection then.

I don’t think I have physical changes, but more about inadequate hormones being circulated at night.

Thanks

I too can only get erections via manual stimulation now that I have this libido problem. They are very difficult to achieve, but I can still manage to get them. I feel a strong disconnect between my thoughts and my genitals. Sexual thoughts and images do not give me erections.

Even if I am able to achieve an erection manually, they are poor quality and have little pleasurable feeling. My ejaculate volume is about 20% of what it used to be and is very watery. I ejaculate at very low pressure as well.

Hi Worried,
why do you masturbate if you have no libido or sexual urge to do so? You are not aroused so why do you do it? How often do you get the urge to masterbate?

Thanks
Dl1979

I’ve been masturbating daily my entire life until I lost my sex drive in June 2007.

Nowdays, I have no urge to masturbate whatsoever. After about 4-5 days of not masturbating, I get depressed just thinking that I have no urge to do so, so I force myself to do it. It used to be so routine for me, that if I go several days without doing it now, I feel awkward and unnatural.

Before, my heart would race with excitement at the thought of sexual pleasure. Now, I just force masturbation to test if I have had any improvement in sensitivity or anything.

Dear Worried
I really feel for you, and it hurts to read your story and everyone else’s here. Please keep us updated on your progress and your treatments, we all hope to recover here on this forum.
Right now i’m trying to focus on exercise and catching up sleep. I’ve been stressed out these past two years, been losing weight, and lots of sleep, so I hope for myself that is the reason why I haven’t recovered sooner.

good luck

Precisely the same thing here. It is a mechanical excercise now to “keep things flowing” down there, to the extent they can since Finasteride, and to make sure I can still physically obtain an erection through manual stimulation… it is no longer the same “self-pleasuring” act and high I used to experience pre-Finasteride.

With no libido there is no desire to even get off… since Fin, viewing porn or being with women does nothing to trigger lustful desire or the heart-pounding “rush” of excitement that used to take place before the drug.

Have any of you contacted MERCK about this? What do they say?
