Shouldn't Proscar users be experiencing the same problems

Considering Proscar is the same thing as propecia, shouldn’t people taking this drug for BPH be experiencing the same problems? I checked askapatient.com, and nobody listed the same mental problems that were listed for propecia. This is strange considering over 3.5 million people are on Proscar. Why do you think this is?

I can speculate that:

  1. Propecia users are typically younger and their brains more plastic. Maybe the drug effects a younger, developing brain more than an aged brain.
  2. Proscar users don’t use the drug for the extended period of time that Propecia users do (not sure about this one).

This may have been discussed already, but if it’s the same active ingredient, the same things should be occurring in a Proscar user. What gives?

Proscar users do experience the same sides, possibly in even greater severity.

I am one who took Proscar 1.25mg/day because it was cheaper to do so than taking Propecia.

I also used it for 11 months, and was 25 when I started. Same ingredient (Finasteride), just more of it.

I think people taking Proscar for prostate issues are for the most part older; no offense to them but I doubt they are very sexually active in the first place, so they may not even notice the sexual side effects as much.

I’m more curious about the cognitive side effects. Why are people going crazy on askapatient.com about propecia, but not proscar?

I think a lot of the cognitive/mental side effects are caused by the anxiety, depression, panic attacks, mania, stress that goes a long with battling and thinking about this problem.
Also, low T causes dementia.
They are all related, mind and hormone as well.
But for me I can attest that the more I am stressed and panicked over the whole situation, the more I make simple mental mistakes like those I would never make, and am just out of it a lot, because I am so preoccupied and worried all the time.

I think this is the major cause of mental issues. The lower T is secondary.

I agree with you, but what does that have to do with proscar users not complaining nearly as much about mental side effects?

because they’re mostly older, married maybe, and just don’t sweat their gonads problems as much, idk…

I took proscar as well at 1mg per day. Its an interesting point your making though. Even the oldies would know if a drug was screwing them over. Then again, they probably wouldnt ever stop taking it and thats when you really nose dive.

I think my mental problems have only improved since i quit. They were terrible while I was on the drug. Maybe the elderly don’t get hit with the mental sides. i don’t know.

Possibly the older generation that is taking Proscar isn’t Internet savy and don’t log onto forums to investigate their condition/meds/side effects etc.

Also being older and from a different generation, they may feel more embarressed or reserved talking about that. Or maybe their doctors told them this is normal at their age. They tried to tell me that at 45 even though I was more than fine before propecia just 2 months prior.

If you’re taking Proscar for BPH, then you might attribute any sexual problems to BPH, age, or a combination of the two. Brain fog might also be contributed to age. Being that Propecia users are typically younger and presumably don’t have any other risk factors for sexual dysfunction, we’re able to discern the true cause of our troubles.

I took Proscar disolved in vodka, 0,2 mg every day, still got me in to alot of problems…on this site i only mention propecia not to make any confusion, its the same thing…
