Prolactin causes more sensitivity of the androgen receptors in the prostate. High Prolcatin encreases the testosterone uptake in prostate cells and the conversion into DHT. Otherwise Proactin inhibits testosterone production and encreases estradiol levels…
I have only german sources for this assumtions. I look for some english sources.
Appendix:
I remember that I saw some blood results with one conspicuous thing in common: Low DHT level and high Prolactin level. Is this high Prolactin level caused by receptor insensitivity?
I know for a fact that patients with Prolactinoma (a growth that causes excessive amounts of Prolactin) frequently suffer from severe sexual dysfunction. I know that Cabergoline is prescribed for this reason and MANY patients have reported that it causes them to have very heightened sex drives (refer to www.askapatient.com and read the reports). Also, many bodybuilding sites tout the use of Cabergoline as a way to restore natural testosterone by inhibiting Prolactin.
So I’d say prolactin has a negative effect on sexual function.
