Male birth defects via Finasteride?

I have just been to Bosley where I had a procedure, and they recommended that I begin usage of Propecia. Of course before starting a drug I wanted to do research and thank goodness I came across this site. One topic I haven’t seen posted is: does anybody know if anyone has experienced birth defects in their kids while taking Propecia. I know that if the woman encounters the pill that she can pass it on, but can the male pass it through his semen and cause birth defects? Would appreciate any knowledge on the subject.

I don’t know but you should have done research before going to Bosley too. Anyways, this isn’t a hairloss forum so I won’t delve into it any further.

Not that I’m aware but then again we aren’t docs and don’t have access to adverse effects reports from the FDA or other medical databases so who knows – could have happened, just never been reported in mainstream media. Although, I have read a few posts on hairloss sites from men who have successfuly fathered children while on Finasteride, with no issues after birth, and considering the drug has been on the market since 1992 I’m sure we’d have heard something by now if this was a major epidemic…

Regardless… suggest you read this post as well, similar questions to yours:

Theoretically this is possible, but only if the man is on Finasteride AFTER she has conceived and the fetus is developing.

However, this should give you cause to get off the drug regardless if you are planning to have kids, for increased fertility reasons:
