I’ve been off of Propecia for five months now. While my first order of business has been getting rid of the mental side effects that I’ve experienced, I’ve also thought about my hair thinning. I’ve been researching saw palmetto quite a bit lately, and I’ve found little if any evidence of negative side effects EXCEPT for the two stories here on this forum which made it sound like saw palmetto caused as bad side effects as finasteride. It’s hard to really tell if SP was the root cause of the side effects, but does anyone have any anecdotal information about whether saw palmetto can cause side effects or not or whether it can help with finasteride side effects?
i dont get it.
Why is it so hard to belive that saw palmetto could cause the exact same effects as fin?
You have ppl on this site saying it happend to them. I dont belive their stories are less valid than ours (the propecia users), do you? Maybe theres a ton of them out there suffering from it without knowing it. Or perhaps the only reason they dident find this place is that its less likely since they are googeling for sp side effects instead of propecia side effects.
However since alot of ppl here have high dht it might be okay to try and lower it a little. If my dht test comes back high i might try it.
Just remember there are alot of dirrerent kinds of sp preparations. There dried yada yada and raw extracts etc. I remeber reading something about one of the compounds beeing way to strong. This was hardly scientific but posted in the “remedy for hormonal prostatitis” or whatever that thread was called, look it up.

I don’t know what’s so hard about it? Finasteride is a drug – saw palmetto is not.
Logic at its best.
After all you’ve been through with fin, I find it absolutely amazing that you would be willing to subject yourself to possibly more trouble?? How many threads did you have about your studdering and fucked up speach. How much has that damaged you so far? THINK MAN, THINK.
I’d define them both as drugs, first of all, as they alter the body in some state–and you’d most likely be taking this in a pill/powder form.
Second of all, if your logic is that “one is natural, while the other is synthetic”, I’d say that, too, is a red herring.
Let us remember, compounds like PENICILLIN, are natural. This natural substance is produced by the asperelligus fungii, but it can cause various unwanted side effects. It’s a mainstray drug used in the antibiotic industry, btw.
Ever heard of Yohimbine? Being on this site, you’ve probably heard about it before. This compound, like saw palmetto, is a “natural” product, but it can cause SERIOUS anxiety problems. In fact, researchers have used it in the past to exemplify Anxiety Disorders in patients.
Ever heard of… cyanide, ricin, persin, etc? Again, all natural substances that can cause serious harm.
Just because something is natural, doesn’t mean it’s somehow better than a synthetic compound. Likewise, if something is a synthetic compound, it doesn’t mean it’s necessarily harmful.
So, as others have suggested and I myself suggest, don’t take saw palmetto. It’s affecting the same enzymes finasteride affects–why risk it?
to help with fin side effects it would have to reverse the imbalances fin put in place
i don’t see how it could do that when it raises estrogen and decreases DHT like fin does.it’s recommended for BPH , which is a health issue fin is known to help fix also. These products have similar effects , saw p is just fin lite.
- Can you guys post a study here that describes saw palmetto having the same effects as finasteride? I’ve seen so many studies of what finasteride does but nothing on saw palmetto. The article below says SP does not reduce PSA levels. This is why I thought it worked differently than finasteride. The only thing I can gather from this is that it does not reduce PSA levels whatever the hell that means.

This article says that SP reduces BPH symptoms WITHOUT reducing prostate size:

Finally, this study shows a slew of things that are 5 alpha reductase inhibitors, ranging from green tea to quercetin (citrus) to daidzein (soy).
If all these things are 5 alpha reductase inhibotors, perhaps we should “eat like shit” for a few days and see if that helps with anything?
- Perhaps the mental side effects from saw palmetto is some sort of allergy, similar to someone allergic to peanuts or soy consuming those products?
yes , saw palmetto contains an estrogen mimicing product called beta-sitosterol.along with soy and other estrogen boosters it can cause impotence and breast cancers.
I have never heard of PSA.I am referring to the similar method which SP works in comparison to fin , by altering and changing the hormonal makeup.
An allergy that continues 18 months after ending the product is not a theory that i can put my faith into.If you want to twist the facts as you continue to convince yourself to take the tablets i don’t care.
That study was most likely in vitro, not in vivo. Many things block 5AR in vitro.
well it’s useless in me arguing with you about it since you seem to have made your mind up already anyway
