anyone else a heavy smoker and drinker?

i’m curious if anyone has truly had a lot of success by cutting out these two vices. i’ve smoked for ten years (around 1/2 pack a day) and been a consistently heavy drinker for the last five. it seems like giving these up for a short time really doesn’t do much at all for my symptoms. has anyone else given them up long term and seen strong benefits? i know i should give them up anyway - but i figure heaving a few drinks and some cigarettes at least gives me a little joy under otherwise horrible circumstances.

any insight would be appreciated.

Quitting both of these would be advisable regardless of Finasteride use, as a way to improve overall health. We have many men here (self included) who do not smoke and rarely drink who are affected by the drug irregardless. Quitting smoking/drinking therefore wouldn’t be expected to resolve PFS symptoms, as they are not the cause.

I’m right there with you on this one. I have given up so many things that supposedly alleviate symptoms… but I’m not really sure about any of it. I have almost completely given up sugar, caffeine, and alcohol, and I sometimes feel I’m depriving myself for no good reason. I know these things in moderation will not set me back. Giving these things up just doesn’t address the root of the problem, and I need the few forms of pleasure I can get. Heavy drinking is probably a pretty awful idea, but the occasional drink (especially red wine) has helped me quite a bit in the past.

I have never smoked and don’t drink alcohol. Cutting that out won’t cure your PFS, but giving up smoke and very moderate drinking will always be good for your health. And better health will make it easier to cope with PFS, I suppose.

smoking decreases your body’s ability to create nitric oxide, and fyi nitric oxide is what makes your penis get hard.

yea i know. cialis at 5mg every three days has solved ED issues for me. i was speaking more to mental and physical sides. i know its better for my overall health to quit these things but they are indulgences i love and as long as i know they won’t cure my PFS - i’m not willing to completely give them up.

nitric oxide has wayyyy more functions in the body than just this.

This post is stating the obvious. Hmm pretty sure smoking and drinking is already known to cause problems, it’s not going to benefit your recovery.

I believe it is actually your post that is stating the obvious. I wasn’t looking for a bunch of non-smokers and non-drinkers to tell me what I already know about how they effect my overall health. What I was actually seeking out was someone who quit these things while suffering PFS and gleaned true benefits. It seems like the consensus on the board is that removing these things won’t make much of a difference at all. (That has certainly been true of my experimentation as well).

Thanks for your thoughts though, honestly.

I’m just talking realistically here, if you eliminate all the bad habits and increase your over all health that it is the best chance you to make improvements. I know it’s hard to stay positive and have the “I’m screwed” mentality. Never under estimate the body’s power to improve with diet and exercise. Excuse me, if i’m again stating the obvious.
